BALANCED SCORING FALCONS TRIP BEARS, 105-94

RALEIGH, N.C.  – The Shaw University men's basketball team couldn't overcome a hot shooting Saint Augustine's University squad on the road falling, 105-94 in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division matchup inside Emery Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

 

With the loss, Shaw falls to 4-16 overall, 1-9 CIAA and 0-6 Southern Division while SAU improves to 7-11 overall, 2-6 CIAA, 2-3 Southern Division. The Bears shot 54-percent from the floor also finishing 11-23 from beyond the arc for 47-percent. The Flacons matched the Bears shooting 60-percent from the floor while shooting 14-29 from outside for 48 percent.

 

Senior guard DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) opened the contest with a three-point basket adding to his CIAA lead in made attempts. Shaw then owned an eight-point lead at 25-17 with 12:14 left in the opening period. Over the next four minutes, Saint Augustine's erased the deficit to take a 31-29 lead at the 8:27 mark. The Falcons went up by as many as seven before knocking down a three-point basket at the buzzer to give SAU the 49-43 lead at the break.

 

SAU opened the lead up to 10 to the start the second stanza before junior forward Alex Owens (Brandenton, FL) ended the Falcons run with a basket inside. SAU pushed its lead to 15 (78-63) with 11:06 left in the contest before forcing a Shaw timeout with 8:36 remaining and the Bears trailing by their biggest deficit 87-69. The Bears were unable to carve into the Falcons lead as they trailed by 15 at the final media timeout.

 

Kelsie added a three to trim the SAU lead to 96-86 with 2:42 remaining.  A free throw with 1:34 left cut the Falcons lead to 98-90 before the Falcons were able to ice the game at the free throw line for the 105-94 victory.

 

Senior guard Greyson Kelley (Raleigh, NC) led the Bears with 28 points finishing 9-14 from the floor and 9-9 from the charity stripe. Kelsie followed with 25 points going 10-15 from the floor while Owens finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds in his season debut. Six different Falcons scored in double figures led by Nilous Hodge who finished with 20 points.

 

The Bears will return to action Monday, Jan. 27 as they host Southern Division leader Winston-Salem State University. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. inside historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
