Bowie, MD – The Shaw University men's basketball team saw it's losing skid continue as the Bears dropped a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross-division matchup to the Bowie State University Bulldogs, 96-67 Saturday afternoon inside A.C. Jordan Arena.
The loss drops the Bears to 4-13 overall, 1-9 CIAA while the Bulldogs improve to 11-8 overall and 3-3 CIAA. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Bulldogs.
The Bears fell behind quickly after the opening tip due to poor shooting from the floor. Shaw found themselves trailing 13-5 at the first media timeout and by a bigger margin of 23-7 with 9:52 left in the half. Bowie State used a 16-3 run to push its lead to 44-15 at the half. The Bears finished the half shooting an ice cold 17-percent from the field compared to 53-percent from the host Bulldogs.
After the break, Shaw was unable to carve into the huge halftime deficit as BSU used a rebound margin of 48-32 over the Bears to maintain their lead. The Bears were able to string together a few runs to improve their shooting percentage 46-percent (18-39), in the second half. However, the Bulldogs answered the runs to maintain their lead and cruise to the cross-division victory.
Freshman guard Nigel Martin (Cleveland, OH) paced the Bears with 25 points and 15 rebounds followed by senior guard DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) with 16 points. Senior guard Greyson Kelley (Raleigh, NC) and freshman guard Marvis Odia, II (Houston, TX) followed with 12 points each.
Saiquan Jamison led the Bullldogs with 20 points in a reserve role.
Shaw returns to action Monday, Jan. 20 as the Bears host Virginia Union University. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. inside historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
