RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior guard DaVaugh Kelsie (Richmond, VA) scored his career 1,000th point late in the contest but the Shaw University men's basketball team fell to Lincoln University 82-66 in a deemed non-conference matchup Thursday evening inside of historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
With the loss, Shaw falls to 4-10 overall while Lincoln jumps to 4-12
The Bears produced one of the worst shooting outings of the season finishing well below their season average shooting percentage at just 29-percent. Many looks were open but wouldn't fall as much of the attention was diverted to Kelsie. Things remained tight to open with Shaw leading 13-12 with 9:51 left in the opening half. There, Lincoln caught fire with a mixture of outside shots and put back baskets inside to pull in front 33-23 before extended its lead to 40-28 at the half.
The start to the second half mirrored the end of the first as the Lions streak on offense continued as Lincoln led 51-33 before the next media timeout. A quick 8-0 run from Shaw made things interesting briefly before Lincoln took back control of the contest leading 70-55 with 4:57 left.
Needing just three points with less than a minute left in the contest, senior guard Imani Miller (Knoxville, TN) came up with the steal and found Kelsie open in the corner for the three pointer to cross the 1,000th point mark providing the highlight of the evening.
Kelsie and senior guard Greyson Kelley (Raleigh, NC) led the Bears with 14 points each. Earning his first career start, freshman guard Marvis Odia, II (Houston, TX) finished with 13 points while fellow freshman guard Jaelyn Etheridge (Cleveland, OH) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points.
Shaw returns to action Saturday, Jan. 11 as the Bears travel to Fayetteville State University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Capel Arena.
