RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's basketball returns to historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium for the first time since Dec. 12 as the Bears will play host to the Claflin University Panthers. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m.

Shaw enters the contest at 4-8 overall, 1-5 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play after dropping a road contest to Virginia Union in heartbreaking fashion, 99-97 on Jan. 4.


Junior guard Greyson Kelley (Raleigh, NC) continues to lead Shaw on offense pouring in 19.9 points per game which is good for third overall in the CIAA.  Freshman guard Nigel Martin (Cleveland, OH) contributes 16.8 per contest which places him in the top 10 leading scorers overall in the CIAA and senior guard DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA)

adds 12.8 per contest.


The Bears are averaging 82.3 points per game offensively, shooting 44-percent from the floor while also connecting on 39-percent of their outside shots. All three percentages rank top-3 of the CIAA with the outside shooting percentage being first overall.


Claflin (6-7, 3-2 CIAA) enters Monday's matchup winners of back-to-back contests averaging 70 points per game which ranks last in the conference. The Panthers are currently shooting 43-percent from the floor as a squad. Letrell West paces the Panthers with 15.2 points per offense followed by Brandon Davis with 11.2 points per outing for Claflin's double-digit scoring leaders. 


Monday's matchup will be the second this season between Shaw and Claflin as the Bears fell in their first meeting to the Panthers, 76-64 on Dec. 21, 2019 on the road in Orangeburg, S.C. Within the Southern Division standings, Shaw is 0-2 (6th) overall while Claflin is 3-0 (3rd).
