RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's basketball team ended its year end road trip with a 76-64 lost in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division matchup to Claflin University Saturday afternoon inside of Tullis Arena in Orangeburg, S.C.

With the loss, Shaw falls to 4-7 overall, 1-4 CIAA, 0-2 Southern Division. Claflin improves to 6-7 overall, 3-2 CIAA, 2-1 Southern Division on the season.

Freshman guard Nigel Martin (Cleveland, OH) got the scoring going with a strong basket inside. After that, both teams were scoreless for awhile trading missed baskets. The score would rise to 8-7 in favor of the Bears at the first break. Senior guard Imani Miller (Knoxville, TN) added a three-point play followed by another basket inside from Martin to push the Shaw lead to 13-9. Claflin would battle back to tie the game at 15-15 before taking a 20-15 lead. The Panthers led for the remainder of the contest.

Another cold drought followed the Bears offense as the Claflin lead would grow to 33-22 before senior guard DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) was fouled shooting a three. Kelsie would make two out of three from the stripe. The Panthers would coast on to a 38-26 lead at halftime.

The Panthers hot shooting continued to open the half as a barrage of outside shots ballooned the Claflin lead to 48-31. Shaw would later fall behind as many as 20 as the Bears suffered one of its worst outside shooting outings of the season. Shaw battled to the end trimming the Claflin lead to nine with under two minutes left but free throws down the stretch iced the contest for the Panthers.

Martin continues to impress during his rookie campaign as he led the Bears with 24 points, 15 rebounds. Kelsie and Kelley rounded out the double-figure scorers for Shaw with 10 points each.

The Bears return to action in the new year on Saturday, Jan. 4 as Shaw travels to Virginia Union University. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. inside Barco-Stevens Hall
