RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's basketball team will open Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) divisional play as they travel to Salisbury, N.C. to face Livingstone College Thursday, Dec. 19. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. inside New Trent Gymnasium.
Shaw enters the contest with a 4-5 record and 1-1 overall in CIAA action, most recently dropping a non-conference tilt at Virginia State University, 98-61 on Saturday, Dec. 14.
The Bears are led by junior guard Greyson Kelley (Raleigh, NC) who averages 19.9 points per game – good for fourth overall in the CIAA. Freshman guard Nigel Martin (Cleveland, OH) whom was named back-to-back CIAA Rookie of the Week contributes 15.2 points and 5.9 rebounds with fellow freshman guard Dhashon Dyson (Chicago, IL) adds 13.2 per contest. Senior guard DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) rounds out the Bears double figure scorers at 12.1 points per outing.
Offensively, the Bears are averaging 82.3 points per game which ranks third in the CIAA while shooting 44-percent from the floor which is good for fifth overall in the CIAA.
Livingstone (7-4, 3-2 CIAA) enters Thursday's matchup averaging 84.2 points per game – good for second overall in the CIAA. The Blue Bears are currently shooting 47-percent from the floor which also ranks second overall. Roger Ray leads Livingstone in scoring pouring with 20.3 points per contest while Lydell Elmore follows with 16.6 points and nine rebounds per outing.
This will be the first of two matchups this season between the Bears and Blue Bears as the two teams will meet again in Raleigh on Jan. 15. While the overall series has been pretty equal between the two squads, Shaw has been able to win six out of the last seven meetings over the Blue Bears.
