MEN’S BASKETBALL SET TO TRAVEL TO VIRGINIA STATE SATURDAY

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's basketball team will open another road trip as they travel to Ettrick, Va., to face Virginia State University Saturday, Dec. 14. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. inside the VSU Multipurpose Center.

 

Live coverage will be available on www.shawbears.com and www.govsutrojans.com. Saturday's tilt has been deemed a non-conference matchup.

 

Shaw enters the contest at 4-4 and 1-1 overall in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), most recently defeating Elizabeth City State University, 84-78 on Thursday, Dec. 12 earning their first conference victory.

 

The Bears are led by junior guard Greyson Kelley (Raleigh, NC) who averages 21 points per game. Freshman and CIAA Rookie of the Week, Nigel Martin (Cleveland, OH) contributes 16.0 points and 6.3 rebounds while fellow freshman Dhashon Dyson (Chicago, IL) averages 14.3 points per outing. Senior sharpshooter DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) rounds out the Bears double-figure scorers with 12.3 points per contest.

 

The Bears are averaging 85.0 points per game which ranks third in the CIAA just behind VSU at 85.1 while shooting 46-percent from the floor, the Bears are shooting 39-percent from behind the arc which tops the CIAA. Shaw also currently leads the CIAA  with 76-percent shooting from the free-throw line.

 

Virginia State (6-4, 3-1 CIAA) enters Saturday's matchup averaging 85.1 points per game. The Trojans are currently shooting 48-percent from the floor. Andrew Corum leads VSU in the scoring department at 12.9 points per contest while collecting 7.8 rebounds per game.  In their most recent outing, VSU topped Winston-Salem State at home Thursday evening 84-78.

 

This will be the second matchup this season between the Bears and Trojans as VSU dominated Shaw from start to finish 113-82 on Dec. 2 in Raleigh which counted as a CIAA contest.
