RALEIGH, N.C. – In a rematch of the 2019 CIAA Championship game, much remained the same as the Trojans from Virginia State University raced out to a big lead and maintained command the rest of the contest coasting to a 113-82 victory over Shaw University Monday evening inside of historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium
With the loss, Shaw falls to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action. VSU improves to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in CIAA play.
After keeping things close to open the contest, Virginia State broke open a 5-5 tie to push ahead 16-6 with 14:14 left in the half. The VSU lead grew to as many as 25-6 before freshman Marvis Odia, II (Houston, TX) scored inside to snap the Trojan run. Shaw finally found a small groove on the offensive end but found themselves trailing by a wide margin at the half 56-23.
VSU scorched the nets in the opening 20 minutes, shooting an impressive 57-percent from the floor while also shooting 61-percent (8-13) from beyond the arc. Shaw did themselves little favor shooting just 27-percent.
The Bears opened the second half showing some fight going a few runs. Unfortunately, all were responded by the Trojans who were able to maintain their halftime lead for the remainder of the contest.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 7 as Shaw hosts Bowie State University. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. inside historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
