RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's basketball team stayed within reach of the No. 4 West Liberty University team early on in the first 10 minutes but the Bears could not contain a hot-shooting Hilltoppers squad in a 132-85 setback inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium during the 2019 Shaw Men's Basketball Classic on Sunday afternoon.

Shaw was powered by freshman guard Dhashon Dyson's (Chicago, IL) game-high 25 points and four rebounds while senior guard DaVaughan Kelsie (Richmond, VA) chipped in 17 points, and freshman guard Nigel Martin (Cleveland, OH) added 16 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard David Madol (Manchester, NH) finished with 14 points and five rebounds.

Nov. 4 West Liberty improved to 2-0 after connecting on 47-percent (16-34) from the 3-point line for the game, including 50-percent (10-20) in the first half. The Hilltoppers scored the game's first basket on a 3-pointer from Marlon Moore, Jr. but Shaw responded with an easy two from senior guard Imani Miller (Knoxville, TN) to stay close.

The Bears stayed within reach, closing the gap to one point again at the 14:15 mark after another bucket from Miller but a 3-pointer from the Hilltoppers began a 16-0 run that eventually turned into a 40-17 scoring margin with 6:03 left in the first half.

Shaw trailed by as many as 35-points before heading into intermission with a 69-36 disadvantage.

In the second half, WLU outscored Shaw 63-49 as the Hilltoppers outscored the Bears in three categories including a 36-22 in points in the paint, 13-9 in second chances and 31-27 from bench points. Defensively, WLU outrebounded Shaw 53-29.

WLU had six players score in double figures, led by Pat Robinson, II with 22 points and nine rebounds.

Shaw will return to action on Nov. 15 for the CIAA/SIAC Challenge hosted by Winston-Salem State. The Bears will take on Morehouse Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a contest with Fort Valley State on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m.
