RALEIGH, N.C. – Junior guard Greyson Kelley (Raleigh, NC) charted a career-high 27 points to lead the Shaw University men's basketball team to a 96-92 victory over Frostburg State University in its season opener and 2019 Men's Basketball Classic inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.


Four different Bears joined Kelley in double figure scoring with senior guard DaVaughan Kelsie (Richmond, VA) tallying 16 points and four rebounds off the bench while freshman guard Dhashon Dyson (Chicago, IL) adding 15 points also off the bench. Senior guard David Madol (Manchester, NH) dropped 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists while freshman guard Nigel Martin (Cleveland, OH) rounded out the double figure scoring for Shaw with 11 points and five rebounds.


Additionally, Kelley chipped in six rebounds and was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line.


The Bears jumped out to a 16-7 lead in the first seven minutes of action capped off by a 3-pointer from Kelley. Shaw then blistered a 22-10 scoring margin to take a 15-point lead (32-17) over the Bobcats with 7:30 left in the first half.


Frostburg State managed to cut the Bears lead to single digits when Leondre Rogers hit a 3-pointer but Shaw managed to outscore the Bobcats in the final four minutes of the first stanza capped off by two-consecutive 3-pointers from Dyson and senior guard Darian Daniels (Sarasota, FL), giving Shaw a 48-35 stand at halftime.


Shaw led most of the second half and would tie its largest lead of the game at 15 points (72-57) at the 10:31 mark after Kelsie drained his third 3-pointer of the night but Frostburg State rattled off the double digit deficit, going on a 29-13 scoring frame.


Down by one point, the Bobcats took its first lead of the second half on a layup with 2:36 left in regulation. After a good defensive possession for the Bears, two free-throws from Madol gave Shaw a one-point edge before Shaw scored eight unanswered points in the final 12 seconds which proved to secure the win.


Daniel Alexander paced the Bobcats with 22 points and 12 rebounds while Leondre Rogers added 16 points and Demetrich Williams chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds. Both Joe Adedayo and Torrin Stephens finished with 12 points each to round out the double figure scoring for Frostburg State.


The 2019 Shaw Men's Basketball Classic will resume play on Saturday, Nov. 9 with Mansfield versus West Liberty at 2 p.m., followed by Saint Augustine's versus Frostburg State at 4 p.m. in Spaulding Gymnasium.
