RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's basketball team will host its 2019 Classic on Friday, Nov. 8 through Sunday, Nov. 10 inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium that will feature Saint Augustine's University, Mansfield University, West Liberty University and Frostburg State University.


All five games will offer live statistics on with live video on Friday and Sunday on the Shaw Bears Sports Network.


The Classic schedule will start with the Bears taking on Frostburg State at 6 p.m. Saturday will include a two games featuring Mansfield versus West Liberty at 2 p.m., followed by Saint Augustine's and Frostburg State at 4 p.m. The final day of the classic will start at 2 p.m. with Mansfield against SAU and then Shaw versus West Liberty at approximately 4 p.m.


The Bears return six players from last year's squad that were runner-up conference champions and Southern Division champs for the third-straight season under former head coach Joel Hopkins. Out of the six returners, the Bears will have to rely heavy on senior guard DaVaughan Kelsie (Richmond, VA) who was the team's second leading scorer (10.9 ppg) a season ago while also looking to get help from senior guard Greyson Kelley (Raleigh, NC) and sophomore forward/center Jah'Lil Carter (Charlotte, NC).


Shaw wrapped up the 2018-19 season 17-13 overall and 10-8 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Conference. The Bears were picked seventh overall and third in the South in the CIAA preseason polls announced back on Oct. 1. Associate head coach Dominique Stephens will lead the program this season.


Mansfield, a member of the Pennsylvania State athletic Conference (PSAC) was 4-24 last year. This will be the second year, MU has competed in the Shaw Classic as the Mountaineers went 0-2, falling to Shaw 91-77 and Saint Augustine's, 89-74. John Szentesy leads the program in his first season after being named interim in 2018-19.


West Liberty, a member of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) will begin its season with a No. 4 ranking according to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) annual NCAA DII Preseason Top-25 poll. The Hilltoppers are coming off its eighth NCAA Division II Sweet 16 run in the last 10 years and have been ranked No. 1 or 2 in the country at least once during each of the past nine seasons. WLU finished 28-5 overall and 20-2 in conference action and was predicted to finish first in their conference preseason poll. Ben Howlett will begin his third season at the helm.


Frostburg State is coming off a 10-16 overall record and 6-8 mark in the MEC. The Bobcats were recently projected to finish ninth in the preseason poll under second-year head coach Sean Brown. Frostburg State moved up to NCAA DII this season as they concluded its final season as a NCAA DIII member last year.


Saint Augustine's enters the classic after going 11-17 overall and 7-11 in the CIAA. This weekend's classic will also mark the second appearance for the Falcons as they defeated East Stroudsburg, 77-65 and Mansfield, 89-74. SAU was voted to finish 12th in the CIAA preseason polls and seventh in the division. MarQus Johnson will begin his seventh season at the helm of the program.
