CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the third time this season, Shaw University and Saint Augustine's University will meet on the hardwood but this time it will mean a little more as both teams will face each other in the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men's Basketball Quarterfinal Round Wednesday, Feb. 27 at the Bojangles Coliseum. Tipoff is slated for 8:50 p.m.
The winner of the contest will advance to the semifinal on Friday, Mar. 1 at 9 p.m. in the Spectrum Center.
The Bears (14-12) who won the Southern Division title last week will see the floor for the first time since Feb. 23 as the No. 1 seed. Shaw is led by junior Amir Hinton (Philadelphia, PA) who leads the nation and the league in scoring, averaging 30.1 points. He was named the 2019 CIAA Men's Basketball Player of the Year Monday at the tournament banquet.
Additionally, Shaw has three other players posting double digits in scoring that features junior Davon Dillard (Gary, IN) at 11.5, junior Derrick Randolph (Chicago, IL) with 11.2 and junior DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) with 10.8 points, respectively.
Saint Augustine's was able to advance to the next round after hitting a 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds left to pick up a 97-94 win over Lincoln (Pa.) Tuesday night during the men's opening round. Jalen Gaddy scored 30 points to lead the Falcons offensively while Tyre Gathright and Craig McDaniel 19 and 17 points, respectively.
Shaw and Saint Augustine's split during the regular season with the Falcons stealing the first meeting 76-74 in Spaulding but the Bears responded in a major way without its leading scorer on the road in a triumph comeback for the 76-68 victory.
