SHAW’S HINTON NAMED CIAA MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Junior Amir Hinton (Philadelphia, PA) of the Shaw University men's basketball team was named as the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men's Basketball Player of the Year at the annual tournament breakfast held at the Charlotte Convention Center Monday morning.

The All-CIAA, All-Rookie Team and other superlative awards were selected by the Men's Basketball Coaches Association and Sports Information Directors Association.

Hinton becomes just the fourth player in program history to garner the award. He averaged over 30 points per game, leading not only the CIAA in scoring but the NCAA DII as well. Hinton is not only an offensive threat, he is also one of the league's top three defenders and assist leaders while averaging under 38 minutes per outing.

Additionally, the Bears claimed its third consecutive Southern Division title under the guidance of head coach Joel Hopkins. Hinton was the only Shaw player to make the 2019 Men's All-CIAA Team this year.

Shaw is scheduled to play on Wednesday, Feb. 27 against the winner of either Saint Augustine's and Lincoln (Pa.) at 8:50 p.m. at the Bojangles Coliseum.
