CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After winning its third-straight Southern Division title, the Shaw University men's basketball team will be the No. 1 seed of the South during the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) 74th Annual Men's Basketball Tournament announced by the league office Saturday night. The 2019 CIAA Basketball Tournament will be held on Monday, Feb. 25 through Saturday, Mar. 2 at both Bojangles Coliseum and the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C.
The opening rounds for both men's and women's will start on Monday at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Bojangles Coliseum.
The 2019 Men's Basketball Tournament pairings and bracket have been announced by the CIAA Basketball Tournament Committee. Pairings are based on the highest divisional winning percentage. In the event of a tie, the tiebreaker rule begins with head-to-head competition results followed by head-to-head point differential. If a tie situation remains, the highest conference winning percentage will be utilized. The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds of each division receive a first round bye.
As previously stated, Shaw (15-12, 10-8 CIAA) earned the No. 1 seed after defeating Johnson C. Smith, 84-72 Saturday afternoon in its regular season finale. The Bears finished 9-3 in the South for the division title and will await the winner of No. 5 South seed - Saint Augustine's and No. 4 Seed north - Lincoln (Pa.) at 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
Shaw is scheduled to compete against the winner of that contest on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 8:50 p.m. in the Bojangles Coliseum for the quarterfinal round.
