RALEIGH, N.C. – Coming off a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division loss, the Shaw University men's basketball team looks to get back on track Monday, Jan. 7 when they travel to Orangeburg, S.C. for a Southern Division contest against Claflin University.
The Bears (5-6, 1-2 CIAA, 1-0 South) fell at Chowan, 88-73 on Thursday, extending its losing skid to four-straight. Claflin (5-9, 4-5 CIAA, 2-2 South) has also loss their last two games including a 96-76 setback at Winston-Salem State Saturday.
Shaw is led by junior Amir Hinton (Philadelphia, PA) who posts a conference-best 32.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.0 assists. Junior Davon Dillard (Gary, IN) adds 12.5 points per outing after turning in a 28-point performance against the Hawks – a career-high.
As a team, the Bears are scoring 83.9 points per game overall and 78.7 points per game in conference play but has allowed their opponents to chart up 85.2 points.
Triston Thompson's 13.3 points per game leads Claflin offensively, while Danny Brown adds 13.0 points. The Panthers are averaging 72.7 points while its opponents put up 74.5 points.
This will be the second meeting between the two schools this season and eighth overall. Shaw defeated Claflin, 71-66 on Nov. 24. The Bears lead the all-time series 4-3 overall.
Following Monday's contest, the Bears will return home to host a six-game home stretch beginning with Virginia Union University on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 8 p.m. in Spaulding.
