TAMPA, Fla. – The Shaw University men's basketball team fell short against the Eckerd College Tritons, 88-82, Tuesday night at the Martinez Center during the first day of the Tampa University Tournament. Junior guard Amir Hinton (Philadelphia, PA) led the offensive charge, scoring 25 points on 10-of-21 shooting to go along with six assists.
Behind Hinton's performance, Shaw (5-5) shot 33-of-58 for 56.9-percent from the floor, 7-of-12 from the free throw line (58.3-percent) and 9-of-18 (50-percent) from the 3-point line. The Tritons finished with a big 36-20 advantage on the glass, including 17-9 lead in second chance points while connecting 17-of-25 shots made free throws.
Two other players joined Hinton in double figures. Junior guard DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) had another huge night, recording his second 20-point game of the year with 23 points on 7-of-14 shooting from behind the arc while junior guard Davon Dillard (Gary, IN) added 16 points and sophomore center Alex Owens (Bradenton, FL) pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds and seven points.
The first half started off tight for both teams but the Tritons (9-2) established an 18-8 run to lead 33-22 over Shaw with 5:08 left. The Bears responded with a 16-7 offensive spurt to trail 40-38 at the half.
With Eckerd clinging to a 71-69 lead with 5:33 remaining, the Bears clawed to a one-point deficit after a made free throw from Hinton but unfortunately neither teams would score over the next minute or so until Drushaun McLaurn made a layup to put the Tritons ahead 74-71 with 3:50 on the game clock.
Shaw's relentless effort drew them within three this time after an offensive board and putback from Owens but Eckerd would close out the game, icing six-straight free throws for the win.
Myron Hagins led the offensive effort for Eckerd with 23 points and five rebounds, McLaurn tallied 10 points, six rebounds and six assists while Kristiyan Stavrev added 17 points and four rebounds and Gianni Dailey finished with 11 points off the bench.
Shaw will have a quick turnaround tomorrow that features a 7 p.m. contest with Tampa to wrap up the 2018 portion of the schedule. The game will broadcast live on www.shawbears.com.
