MEN’S BASKETBALL WRAPS UP 2018 PORTION OF SCHEDULE AT TAMPA TOURNAMENT
 

 

 

RALEIGH, N.C.   The Shaw University men's basketball team will compete in two games to wrap up the 2018 year at the Tampa University Tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 18 through Wednesday, Dec. 19. The Bears will take on Eckerd College (Dec. 18) at 5 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. tilt with Tampa (Dec. 19).

About The Bears:

The Bears enter the tournament with a 5-3 overall record after suffering a 95-93 overtime loss at Elizabeth City State Thursday (Dec. 13).

 

Junior guard Amir Hinton (Philadelphia, PA) leads the team and DII with 33.3 points per outing. Junior guard Davon Dillard (Gary, IN) and junior guard DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) are scoring 12.3 and 11.6 ppg, respectively. Sophomore center Alex Owens (Brandenton, FL) is the team's leading rebounder with 6.7 boards per outing while Dillard and Hinton chip in 6.0 and 5.5. rebounds, respectively.

 

Shaw averages 83.8 points per game and 36.6 rebounds a night.

 

About Eckerd:

Eckerd is 7-2 on the season, the Tritons is coming off an 80-74 loss to No. 16 Barry on Dec. 8. Drushaun McLaurn leads the team in scoring with 20.4 points per night. Myron Hagins, Marco Behori and Marquis Gilbert all average double figures in scoring as well for the Tritons.

 

McLaurn also leads the team in rebounding (7.4) while Hagins and Behori round out the top-3 spot at 5.9 and 5.2 rebounds. Eckerd averages 80.3 points per night as a unit.

 

About Tampa:

Tampa is 5-4 on the season and hold a 2-1 mark at home this year. The Spartans defeated Florida Tech on Dec. 8 by the score of 99-69. Offensively, Tampa's leading scorer is Anthony Gamble who posts 14.9 points per game while four different players round out the double digit scoring.

 

The Spartans score 71.2 points per game collectively.

 

Both Tampa and Eckerd are members of the Sunshine State Conference (SSC).

 

Tuesday's tilt against Eckerd will mark just the third meeting ever against Shaw. The last time Shaw and Eckerd met was in 2012 as the all-time series is tied at 1-1 overall. Shaw and Tampa will meet for the sixth time in program history, the Bears lead the all-time series 3-2 overall.

Shaw will start the New Year off with a road contest at Chowan University on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
