ATLANTA, Ga. – The Shaw University men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Morehouse College squad on Saturday night, falling to the Maroon Tigers, 93-75 in the final day of the SIAC/CIAA Challenge at Forbes Arena. The loss dips Shaw to 3-1 on the season while Morehouse now stands 2-0.
Junior guard Amir Hinton (Philadelphia, PA) led the way for Shaw with 32 points, including 15-of-15 from the free throw line while notching five assists, five rebounds and two steals. Senior guard Philip Garner (Atlanta, GA) registered 18 points and junior guard Davon Dillard (Gary, IN) posted 10 points and six rebounds the setback.
Morehouse jumped in front early on with a few 3-pointers, including four from three different Maroon Tigers. The Bears cut the deficit to single digits after a jump shot from Dillard midway and then a 3-pointer from Garner pulled Shaw within four points as 6:46 showed on the clock but the Maroon Tigers used an 11-7 spurt to lead 51-37 at halftime.
In the second stanza, the Bears tried to cut the lead on multiple occasions, but for every big run the Bears made, the Maroon Tigers had the answer, hitting big 3-pointers or converting on multiple shots at the rack, finishing the Bears off for the 18-point win.
For Morehouse, Chibueze Ebinum charted 22 points and seven rebounds while Michael Olmert added 14 points and seven assists. Omar Alston contributed 13 points and 15 boards while Robert Andrews and James Walker finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Shaw finished the game, shooting 45.1-percent (23-51) from the field compared to Morehouse's 57.6-percent (34-59).
The Bears will return to action Tuesday, Nov. 20 against Francis Marion in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
