ATLANTA, Ga. – Four different players scored in double figures as the Shaw University men's basketball team cruised to an 85-62 win over Fort Valley State University Friday night during the first day of the SIAC/CIAA Challenge at Forbes Arena. The win gives the Bears a 3-0 start while FVSU falls to 0-4 on the season.
Junior guard Amir Hinton (Philadelphia, PA) scored a game-high 31 points to go along with a career-high eight steals and three assists while junior guard Davon Dillard (Gary, IN) scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds, followed by junior guard DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) and senior guard Philip Garner (Atlanta, GA) who both contributed 12 points apiece.
Shaw outscored the Wildcats in both halves, including a 38-22 surge at halftime led by Hinton who led all scorers with 13 points.
The Bears owned a 25-point lead with under 12:00 remaining in the second half and would not relinquish on the lead as Shaw finished the contest with a shooting percentage of 49.2-percent (29-of-59), connecting 17-of-19 from the charity stripe for 89.5-percent.
The Bears shot 35-percent from behind the arc (10-29) compared the Wildcats that hit 25-58 shots from the floor, including 28-percent from the 3-point line and 50-percent from the free throw line.
Shaw will return to action Saturday (Nov. 17) versus Morehouse at 4 p.m. to conclude the SIAC/CIAA Challenge.
