RALEIGH, N.C. – Junior guard Amir Hinton (Philadelphia, PA) of the Shaw University men's basketball team turned in a 29-point performance along with six rebounds, five assists and four steals to lead the Bears basketball team to a 91-77 victory over Mansfield University during day one of the Shaw Classic inside the historic C.C. Spaulding gymnasium.
The win gives Shaw a 1-0 start for 2018-19 while Mansfield dips to a 0-1 start.
Shaw had a total of four players chart double figures in scoring led by Hinton. Senior guard Davon Dillard (Gary, IN) chipped in 19 points and six rebounds while sophomore center Alex Owens (Brandenton, FL) posted 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists and junior guard DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) finished with 11 points in the winning effort..
A 3-pointer by Dillard ignited a 5-0 start for the Bears to open the contest. The Mountaineers got within after a 3-pointer from Boz Bernstein but the Bears went on an 8-3 run to go ahead 15-9 with 14:34 left in the first half. Mansfield stayed within reach of the Bears but at the 2:13 mark and slam dunk from Hinton, Shaw was able to create separation from MU to lead 41-30 before going into the locker room with a 45-33 spread at halftime.
Shaw controlled the pace the entire second half despite the Mountaineers scoring 44 points to the Bears 46 in the stanza. With a 20-point lead with eight minutes remaining in the contest, MU started to chip away at the Bears lead with a 5-0 run that cut the frame to single digits at the 6:04 mark but Shaw never flinched. In fact, the Bears pushed out a 12-9 advantage to come away with the 91-77 victory.
The Bears will return to action Sunday, Nov. 11 against East Stroudsburg to close out the 2018 Shaw Classic at 4 p.m. in Spaulding.
