THE BATTLE FOR RALEIGH BEGINS WEDNESDAY, SHAW BASKETBALL VISITS SAINT AUGUSTINE’S FOR DOUBLEHEADER

RALEIGH, N.C. – On Wednesday, Jan. 24 the Shaw University men's and women's basketball teams will pay a visit to crosstown rival Saint Augustine's University for a very anticipated Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division showdown inside Emery Gymnasium. The women's game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at approximately 7:30 p.m.

 

Tickets are $13 for general admission and $8.50 for faculty, staff, senior citizens, military personnel with ID, visiting college students with ID and children ages 6-12.

The Women's Game: The Lady Bears (5-14, 2-5 CIAA) will look to snap back after suffering a 108-73 loss to Winston-Salem State on Saturday. The loss was Shaw's first setback in division action this season as their two-game win-streak was snapped by the Rams. Shaw's offensive attack is anchored by senior LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) who registers the CIAA's second-best average in scoring at 18.4 points per game. Sophomore Lervencia Johnson-Tyler (Many, LA) whom did not play against WSSU sits at 13.2 ppg while junior and CIAA Newcomer of the Week Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadenca, CA) and senior KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) contribute 12.4 and 11.6, respectively.

 

The Lady Falcons (4-13, 1-7 CIAA) are coming off a 75-58 loss at Johnson C. Smith Saturday. SAU has lost their last six games on the season but most importantly, the Lady Falcons have not won a game against the Lady Bears in the last 16 meetings. Kaaliya Williams leads the team in scoring this season, averaging 13.6 points per outing.

 

In division standings, the Lady Bears are 1-1 in the south for fourth place while SAU is behind with a 0-2 start, sitting in fifth place.

 

The Men's Game: With arguably some of the best players in the conference going against one another, the men's game features top five scorers, 3-point shooters and rebounders from both squads. For the Bears (12-6, 5-2 CIAA) whom have won their last three games, including a 93-82 win over Winston-Salem State last weekend. Shaw will look to feed off their offensive trio in senior DeAngelo Stephens-Bell (Jacksonville, FL) who ranks second in the CIAA, averaging 19.4 ppg, senior and 3X CIAA Newcomer of the Week, Savon Goodman (Philadelphia, PA) ranks third in the league, averaging 18.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per night and sophomore DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) who puts up 16.8 points per outing (4th in the CIAA)

 

The Falcons (9-10, 6-2 CIAA) suffered a 74-49 defeat by the hands of Johnson C. Smith on Jan. 20. Tyre Gathright paces SAU in scoring, posting 16.6 points per game (5th in the CIAA) while Quincy January leads the conference in rebounds (11.4) and field goal percentage (64.0%).

 

Both teams have one player in the top five in 3-point field goals amongst the CIAA, Shaw's Kelsie ranks second amongst the league (45.5%) while SAU's Kasey Bryant is third (45.2%).

 

Shaw and St. Aug split the 2016-17 season with the Bears taking the first meeting, 51-46 at home but the Falcons responded with a 66-59 win in Emery on Feb. 11, 2017.

 

Wednesday's doubleheader will be the first meeting between both programs this season.
