RALEIGH, N.C. - The Shaw University men's basketball team used a 28-8 run in the second half to defeat Virginia Union University in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
Senior Savon Goodman (Philadelphia, PA) finished with a game-high 22 points, five rebounds and two blocks while sophomore DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) scored 18 points and senior DeAngelo Stephens-Bell (Jacksonville, FL) chipped in 16 points, six rebounds and four steals.
As a team, the Bears shot 46 percent (24-52) from the field and 71 percent (25-35) from the free-throw line and held a 11-7 advantage in second chance opportunities.
Shaw (4-4) led 15-6 in the first five minutes of play. The Bears then groomed their largest lead of the game at 11-points at the 12:59 mark but VUU (3-5) cut the lead to two sparked by a 17-8 run with 6:01 on the clock. A layup by Devin Moore gave the Panthers their first lead of the contest but the lead would change three times before VUU produced a 10-5 scoring margin, including a tip-in at the buzzer to lead 42-39 over Shaw at halftime.
Down 13 in the second half, Shaw rallied back, not allowing a Panthers field goal in the last 1:46 of the contest while also scoring 10 unanswered points in that span for the comeback win.
For the Panthers, James Paige had 22 points while Marcus Hoosier and Jordan Peebles finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Shaw will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 2 when the Bears host Chowan University in their Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) conference opener inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m
