SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Senior guard DeAngelo Stephens-Bell (Jacksonville, FL) notched a career-high 36 points to go along with 10 rebounds to help the Shaw University men's basketball team to their first victory of the 2017-18 season Saturday at the Wolf's Bus Lines Classic at Shippensburg University.
After trailing 38-22 at the break, the Bears (1-1) fought back in the second half, including a firing 53-percent shooting from the field led by Stephens-Bell who scored 24 points in the half alone. Shaw trailed most of the second half up until the last 1:34 when sophomore DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) knotted the game at 70-70 on a three-pointer.
The next possession, Shaw came up with a steal that resulted in sending Stephens-Bell to the line for two. He would sink them both, giving Shaw a two-point lead with 1:06 remaining.
The Bears would then go on to score six-straight while holding the Bald Eagles (0-2) scoreless to pull of the triumph win.
Kelsie finished with 18 points and three rebounds to round-out Shaw's double-digit scorers.
The Bears will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 14 when Shaw welcomes Salem International for their home opener in the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
