GONZALES AND SCROGGINS NAMED FIRST TEAM, 10 BEARS EARN ALL-CIAA FOOTBALL HONORS

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Shaw University football had a total of 10 student-athletes garner All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) honors voted upon by the CIAA Football Coaches Association and Sports Information Directors Association announced by the league office in its 2019 Football All-Conference and Superlatives on Monday (Nov. 11). Senior Keanu Gonzales (Cary, NC) and junior Jaleel Scroggins (Raleigh, NC) highlighted the Bears accolades with First Team recognition.

 

Gonzales, now a two-time All-CIAA offensive lineman made First-Team All-CIAA. He anchored the Bears offensive line that tallied a total of 3,601 yards, posting 26.2 points per game and gathering 2,164 passing yardage and 1,437 on the ground.

 

After senior linebacker Devon Hunt (Hamlet, NC) went down on a season-ending injury during week 3, Scroggins stepped up and led the Bears defense the rest of the way. The defensive back registered a total of 49 tackles, while recording three interceptions, three pass breakups and eight tackle for losses this season to earn All-CIAA First Team recognition.

 

Senior tight end Kevonta Moses (Fort Myers, FL), freshman running back Sydney Gibbs (Black Mountain, NC), junior defensive lineman Dast Sturkie (Anniston, AL), junior defensive back Kevin Sherman (Powder Springs, FL) and senior wide receiver Marquis Gorham (Greenville, NC) all tabbed Second Team All-CIAA honors.

 

Moses led the receiving unit with 37 receptions for 510 yards and nine touchdowns while Gibbs ran the ground unit for Shaw all season, posting 1,024 yards on 179 carries and nine TD's during his rookie season. Sturkie was fourth on the team in tackles (48), but led Shaw in sacks (5) and tackle for losses (12.5) while registering a forced fumble, fumble recovery and three pass breakups.

 

Gorham received recognition as a punt returner, charting 156-yards on 13 punt returns this season with his longest at 37-yards.

 

Additionally, Shaw had four Bears named to the CIAA All-Rookie Team that featured Gibbs, offensive lineman Antavious Zachery (Lithonia, GA), defensive back Akeythio Carson (Gastonia, NC) and defensive back Da'Shawn Wallace (Danville, VA).

 

Shaw concluded the 2019 season 6-4 overall (season-best since 2013) and 5-2 in CIAA action. Within the division, Shaw finished 4-1 for second place under the leadership of fourth year head coach Adrian Jones.
