CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Freshman running back Sydney Gibbs (Black Mountain, NC) was named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Rookie and Running Back of the Week announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Gibbs earned both accolades after leading the Bears football team to a 21-0 win at Winston-Salem State (Nov. 2) with 133-yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries against the Rams defense. Additionally, Gibbs eclipsed over 1,000 all-purpose yards for the season.
With the win, Shaw remains in the hunt for a berth in the CIAA Football Championship if the Bears can defeat rival Saint Augustine's on Saturday (Nov. 9) and Fayetteville State loses at WSSU. The Bears are 5-4 overall and 4-2 mark in the CIAA.
Shaw versus Saint Augustine's will meet for the annual Raleigh Classic this Saturday at the George Williams Athletic Complex. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
