WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After a scoreless first quarter, the Shaw University football team orchestrated 14-point run in the second quarter and 7-0 lead in the third stanza to come away with a 21-0 victory on the road Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Bowman Gray Stadium in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action.
The win improves Shaw to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in CIAA action while Winston-Salem State dips to 4-5 on the year and 3-3 in the league. Within the Southern Division, the Bears now stand 3-1 while the Rams suffer its first division loss on the season with a 3-1 mark as well.
Freshman running back Sydney Gibbs (Black Mountain, NC) rushed for 133-yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns to lead the Bears offense while junior Torrin Campbell (Toledo, Oh) connected 9-of-13 passes for 147-yards and sophomore linebacker Justin Daniels (Wilson, NC) registered 10 tackles and a quarterback hurry to lead the Bears defense in the winning effort.
Shaw owned 345 total yards of offense, including 147 passing and 198 rushing while the Bears defense held the Rams to just 247-yards (130-passing and 117-rushing).
The Bears scored on the first drive of the second quarter after Gibbs ran in the end zone for a nine-yard rushing TD with 14:37 left in the first half. With a 7-0 lead, Shaw's defense held the Rams scoreless throughout the second stanza as the Bears gathered momentum and another score from Gibbs when he broke away up the middle into the end zone untouched for a 72-yard rushing TD and a 14-0 advantage at the 8:39 mark.
Shaw preserved a 14-0 lead at the break and in the third quarter, the Bears rushing unit continued to pound the Rams defense as sophomore running back Allajah Mitchell (Creedmoore, NC) found the end zone on a one-yard rush with 3:36 left in the third quarter.
Down the stretch, WSSU remained plagued on offense as the Rams were forced to punt on a seven-play drive worth 32-yards to start the fourth quarter. The Bears defense trampled WSSU, capped off by a forced fumble from freshman Akeythio Carson (Gastonia, NC) with 7:38 remaining in regulation which stamped the win and hold the Rams scoreless for the remainder of the contest.
Shaw will return to action and Raleigh on Saturday, Nov. 9 versus Saint Augustine's for the fourth annual Raleigh Classic, senior day and CIAA division tilt. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at the George Williams Athletic Complex.
