RALEIGH, N.C. – On Saturday, Nov. 2, the Shaw University football team will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to face the Rams of Winston-Salem State University in a key Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contest. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Bowman Gray Stadium.
Both Shaw and WSSU have identical records as it pertains to the overall and conference records at 4-4 and 3-2 in league standings. The Rams do hold a 3-0 mark in the South while the Bears are 2-1 with its lone division lost to Fayetteville State (Oct. 12).
Shaw is coming off a 36-19 road win at Johnson C. Smith led by two TD's from senior tight end, Kevonta Moses (Fort Myers, FL) on five catches and 73-yards while freshman Sydney Gibbs (Black Mountain, NC) continues to unstoppable for the Bears rushing game with 143-yards on 25 carries. Sophomore linebacker Aaron Worthy (Walkertown, NC) had a team-high eight tackles, 2.5 tackle for loss and a sack to lead the Bears defense.
WSSU is also coming off a win in its lasting, defeating Livingstone 21-0. Kalen Allen had 10 tackles to lead the defense while Quarderman Sloan had 61-yards rushing and a TD and Dominique Graves connected 5-of-19 passes for 40-yards and touchdown.
Within the CIAA, Shaw ranks sixth in the league (27.1 points per game) offensively, while WSSU is eighth, averaging 20.1 points per outing. The Rams do rank second in the league in defense by allowing its opponents to score 15.5 per game while the Bears are eighth, allowing 27.5 points for its opponents.
Saturday's contest will mark the 25th meeting between the two programs with WSSU leading the all-time series 13-9-2 against Shaw. However, the Bears did claim a 26-21 victory on Oct. 27, 2018 in Durham, N.C.
