RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University football will travel to Charlotte, N.C. on Saturday, Oct. 26 to take on Johnson C. Smith University in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division tilt at the Irwin Belk Complex. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. on the Eddie C. McGirt Field.

This will be the 60th meeting between Shaw and Johnson C. Smith. JCSU leads the all-time series over the Bears 32-25-2 overall but Shaw won the last meeting with a 42-9 win in Durham, N.C. last season. Since 2007, Shaw has won eight of the last 12 meetings against JCSU.


Shaw is 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the CIAA. The Bears are coming off a 27-20 win against Livingstone for Homecoming last weekend. The victory was highlighted by freshman running back Sidney Gibbs (Black Mountain, NC) who tallied a program-record of three touchdowns on 21 carries to go along with five receptions and 63-yards. For that performance, Gibbs was awarded as the CIAA's football rookie of the week while senior kicker/punter Beni Kinsemi (Charlotte, NC) tabbed the leagues special team's player of the week for his 3-for-3 effort in extra points and 2-for-2 stand in field goal attempts. Kinsemi ranks fifth in the CIAA for field goals with four made on the season.


Defensively, sophomore linebacker Aaron Worthy (Walkertown, NC) charted a team-high 10 tackles and a tackle for loss while junior defensive end Dast Sturkie (Anniston, AL) registered seven tackles, two sacks and two tackle for loss to lead the Bears in the winning effort for the Bears last weekend.


JCSU is 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the CIAA after falling 35-34 to Fayetteville State (Oct. 19) at home. The Golden Bulls have lost its last two outings entering Saturday's contest. JCSU registered 310 yards of offense led by Antonio Wallace who was 9-for-17 in pass completions for 54-yards and a TD while Emanuel Wilson rushed for 195-yards on 21 carries and three scores. Cameron Ellis and Chris Johnson was the Golden Bulls leaders defensively with eight tackles apiece in the last outing.


Within the CIAA rankings, Wilson leads the conference in rushing with 992-yards and 10 touchdowns while Shaw's Gibbs is fifth with 589-yards and seven TDs. Senior quarterback Torrin Campbell (Toledo, OH) is third in the league for passing (1252-yards) and 13 TDs while Wilson is fourth in scoring (10 TDs).


Amongst the CIAA's defensive statistics, JCSU's Ellis is third in passes defended (9), while Shaw's junior defensive back Kevin Sherman (Powder Springs, GA) is fifth in interceptions (4).
