CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Shaw University football had two players earn Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) weekly honors announced by the league office Monday afternoon. Freshman running back Sydney Gibbs (Black Mountain, NC) was named as this week's Rookie of the Week while senior kicker/punter Beni Kinsemi (Charlotte, NC) was chosen as the league's Special Team Player of the Week.
Kinsemi grabbed his first ever CIAA weekly honor after a 3-for-3 performance in extra points and a perfect 2-for-2 in field goal attempts in the Bears 27-20 win against Livingstone on Saturday, Oct. 19. Kinsemi punted five times for 159 yards with a long of 45-yards.
Gibbs tabbed his second Rookie of the Week accolade this season, posting 21 carries for 161-yards for a program record of three touchdowns (in a single game) during the Bears Homecoming victory. Additionally, Gibbs led the receiving unit with five catches and 63-yards in the contest.
Shaw (3-4, 2-2 CIAA) will travel to Charlotte, N.C. on Saturday, Oct. 26 for a division contest with Johnson C. Smith University at 1 p.m. The game will be played at the Irwin Belk Complex.
