RALEIGH, N.C. – Looking to put last weekend's contest in the rearview, the Shaw University football team will open Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division play on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Fayetteville State University. Kickoff between the Bears and Broncos is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium.

This will be the 15th meeting between the two teams since 2004. Fayetteville State owns the series 8-6 overall, including five-straight wins over the Bears for the Broncos highlighted by last year's 29-16 win at Durham, NC on Oct. 6, 2018. Head coach Adrian Jones is 0-3 all-time against head coach Richard Hayes, Jr.

Coming off a disappointing 35-0 setback at Virginia State, the Bears (2-3, 1-1 CIAA) will look to redeem themselves and get back into the win column and go head-to-head with a very talented Fayetteville State (4-1) team who sits at the No. 1 spot in the South with a 2-0 start in league action after defeating Chowan, 66-20 in its last outing.

Against the Trojans, Shaw was held to a season-low 187 total yards of offense (18 on the ground and 169 through the air). For the season, Shaw's offense has been directed by junior quarterback Torrin Campbell (Toledo, OH) with 1,129-yards on 84-of-156 pass completions and 12 touchdowns while Gibbs has charted 71 rushes for 364-yards and three touchdowns. The receiving unit has been led by multiple receivers but both senior tight end Kevonta Moses (Fort Myers, FL) and senior Marquis Gorham (Greenville, NC) have 238-yards apiece.

Without its star linebacker and leader, the Bears defense has been led by junior defensive back Jaleel Scroggins (Raleigh, NC) with 31 tackles, four tackle for loss and one interception while senior linebacker Sadonte Fuller (Atlanta, GA) and junior defensive back Kevin Sherman (Powder Springs, GA) contribute 28 and 25 tackles, respectively.

The Broncos enter Saturday's game on a three-game winning streak and 3-1 mark at home this season. FSU averages 46.2 points per game while holding its opponents to 18.6 ppg. The rushing game is led by Stevie Green with 557 yards on 76 carries and seven touchdowns while the passing game has seen various quarterbacks led by Richard Latimer who has completed 29-of-50 passes for seven touchdowns and 474 yards. Tyeous Sharpe is the team's leading receiver with 22 catches for 219 yards and four TD's.

Defensively, Nigel Peele has a team-high 39 tackles, 1.5 tackle for loss, one sack, and an interception while Keyshawn James and Chrishon Springs have tallied 32 and 29 tackles, respectively.
