RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University football will travel to Ettrick, Va., on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division contest with the Trojans of Virginia State University. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at Rogers Stadium.

Saturday marks the 53rd meeting between Shaw and Virginia State dating back to 1902. The Trojans lead the all-time series 39-8-5. The last time these two teams met was during the 2018 season, also in Ettrick, Va., where the Bears fell 34-17.

The Bears (2-2, 1-0 CIAA) are coming off a 49-10 victory against Edward Waters last Saturday (Sept. 28) for its second-straight win of the season. Shaw averages 33.0 points per game – fourth in the CIAA, including 412.5 yards per game, including 156.0 rushing and 256.5 passing. The Bears offense is ranked first in the CIAA for passing touchdowns (12) for 1050 total yards.

Junior quarterback Torrin Campbell (Toledo, OH) has 960 yards on 66-of-110 pass completions to go along with 12 touchdowns through four games while the running game has been led by freshman Sydney Gibbs (Black Mountain, NC) who has 339 yards on 58 carries and three touchdowns. Gibbs was named the league's rookie of the week announced by the CIAA Monday for his performance against Edward Waters.

The Bears receiving unit is led by junior Daniel Bender (Jacksonville, FL) with 226 yards on 18 catches and four touchdowns.

Junior defensive back, Jaleel Scroggins is the Bears leading tackler with 30 on the season, 7.5 tackle for loss and one interception while senior linebacker Sadonte Fuller (Atlanta, GA) and junior defensive back Kevin Sherman (Powder Springs, GA) post 25 and 22 tackles, respectively.

Virginia State (3-1, 1-0 CIAA) defeated Johnson C. Smith in its last outing. The Trojans offense is led by Cordelral Cook with 520 yards on 44-of-81 pass completions and three TD's while Demetrius Strickland has 334 rushing yards on 60 carries and three scores. VSU's defense has been led by William Lulu who has 21 tackles.

VSU has won the last two of three meetings against Shaw dating back to 2012.
