CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Shaw University standout and freshman running back, Sidney Gibbs (Black Mountain, NC) of the Bears football program was named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Rookie of the Week announced by the league office Monday.

Gibbs turned in a career-high 127 yards on 16 carries against Edward Waters and the Bears 49-10 victory last weekend. Additionally, the standout freshman averaged 7.9 yards per carry and caught a pass for five yards in Shaw's last outing.

The accolade marks the second Bear to be nominated for a weekly honor and Gibbs first for 2019. A complete list of the CIAA weekly honors for week 4 can be found here.

The Bears (2-2, 1-0 CIAA) will return to action Saturday, Oct. 5 at Virginia State University for a CIAA cross division contest slated for 1 p.m. at Rogers Stadium in Ettrick, Va.
