Shaw is now 2-2 overall while Edward Waters falls to 0-4 on the season. The Bears were led by junior quarterback Torrin Campbell (Toledo, OH) with 222 yards on 16-of-23 pass completions and five touchdowns while freshman running back Sidney Gibbs (Black Mountain, NC) rushed 16 times for 127 yards.
The Bears receiving unit had an impressive showing, highlighted by senior Malik Odom () who registered a career-high 64 yards on three receptions and two touchdowns while senior Kevonta Moses (Fort Myers, FL) charted three catches for 41 yards and two TD's and junior Daniel Bender (Jacksonville, FL) who added 64 yards for three catches.
The Bears produced 245 yards through the air and 267 on the grounds against the Tigers who accounted for 252 total yards of offense.
Shaw had the ball to open the game and used a 35-yard run by Bender for the game's first touchdown on the afternoon. The Bears then scored again at the 6:56 mark when Campbell connected with Odom for a 5-yard passing TD, giving Shaw a 14-0 lead after one quarter of action.
To start the second quarter, EWC found the end zone for its first score on a nine yard reception TD by David Beeks to cut the Bears lead 14-7 with 14:51 left but the Bears responded quickly when Campbell found Moses for a 20-yard scamper to provide a 21-7 advantage for Shaw.
Just before halftime, the Tigers drilled a 42-yard field goal ignited by an 18-play drive worth 60 yards to trail the Bears 21-10 at intermission.
In the second half, it would be all Shaw as the Bears outscored Edward Waters 14-0 in both the third and fourth quarter capped off by Moses and Odom's second TD of the afternoon.
Defensively, the Bears were led by sophomore linebacker Justin Daniels (Wilson, NC) with a career-high 10 tackles, two sacks and two tackle for loss while senior linebacker Sadonte Fuller (Atlanta, GA) added eight tackles and 1.5 tackle for loss.
EWC had 190 yards through the air and just 62 yards on the ground. Shaw finished with 26 first downs while the Tiger had 17. The Bears were 5-of-10 on third downs and 2-of-3 on fourth down. EWC was 4-of-17 on third down and 2-of-5 on fourth down.
Shaw will return back to conference play next Saturday, Oct. 5 at Virginia State University for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) tilt. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Rogers Stadium.
