RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University football team (0-1) will make a visit to Mars Hill, N.C. to face the Lions of Mars Hill University (0-1) on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Meares Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
Saturday's tilt will be the first meeting between the two teams in program history.
Shaw will be playing its second road contest of the season. The Bears are coming off a 38-10 road loss to Hampton. That game saw a 24-point second quarter deficit for SU before the Bears finally got on the scoreboard with 66-yard pass from senior quarterback Keon Marsh (Queens, NY) to senior running back Dorrel Mcclain (Raleigh, NC) for a touchdown. HU scored twice in the second half despite Shaw's field goal in the fourth.
Defense held its own against Hampton; led by junior linebacker Devon Hunt (Hamlet, NC) who recorded a game-high 12 tackles and a forced fumble. Offensively, the Bears will look to get off to a better start this weekend against Mars Hill after a compiling just 191 offensive yards (182 passing, nine rushing) versus the Pirates.
Mars Hill is also coming off a 28-7 loss to East Tennessee State last weekend. The Lions tied with the Buccaneers at halftime (7-7) but ETSU held a 21-0 scoring margin over Mars Hill in the second half to come away with the win.
Collectively, MHU had 263 offensive yards compared to its opponents 511 total offense. Quarterback Austin Brown was 17-of-25 in pass completions for 143 yards and one touchdown while receiver Craig Rucker finished with 136 yards on 10 catches and a touchdown.
MHU's defensive leaders are Chris Ferdinand and Malcolm Means who both posted seven tackles apiece in the season opener.
Following Saturday's tilt, the Bears will head home to Durham County Memorial Stadium for its home opener against Chowan University on Sept. 15. The contest is themed as Bring a Kid to the Game where youth ages 6-14 admission is $3.00. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
