HAMPTON, Va. A 24-point second quarter, with two touchdowns coming in the second half doomed the Shaw University football team as the Bears (0-1) were handed their first loss of 2018 in a 38-10 defeat at Division I foe Hampton University Saturday afternoon at Armstrong Stadium.


Senior quarterback Keon Marsh (Queens, NY) accounted for one touchdown pass as he threw for 148 yards on 10-of-23 pass completions. Senior running back Coleman Blackston (Baltimore, MD) had 22 yards on three receptions while senior running back Joshua Edwards (Mcleansville, NC) rushed for 13 yards on one carry.


Defensively, the Bears were led by junior linebacker Devon Hunt (Hamlet, NC) who finished with 12 tackles, 2.5 tackle for loss and one sack while sophomore Brandyne Mackey (Orange Park, FL) and Jaleel Scroggins (Raleigh, NC) both contributed seven tackles each.


In the first quarter alone, Shaw was called for six penalties worth 50 yards as Hampton took a three-point lead on a 37-yard field goal. The Pirates then scored a touchdown on a 12-yard run from Delmon Williams to go ahead 10-0 heading into the second quarter.


After another score from HU, the Bears finally got on the scoreboard when Marsh connected with senior running back Dorrel McClain (Raleigh, NC) for 66-yard touchdown that cut the deficit to 24-7 heading into the locker room at halftime.


Hampton opened up the second half with a five yard rushing touchdown from Byron Barney that built a 31-7 advantage over Shaw. With 14:18 left in the contest, junior kicker Beni Kinsemi's (Charlotte, NC) 31 yard field goal cut the deficit to 31-10 but HU responded with 50 yard pass from Austin Bradley to Barney that would ultimately put the game away for the Bears.


For the contest, Shaw scratched 191 total offensive yards compared the Pirates 302. The Bears had a total of 18 penalties that cost them 154 yards and were 1-for-19 on third down conversions.


The Pirates were led by Williams with 142 yards on 13-18 pass completions and a touchdown while Ronald Bell recorded 57 yards on four receptions and a score, followed by Devin Anderson with 50 yards on 10 carries.


Shaw will return to action Saturday, Sept. 8 at Mars Hill for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
