RALEIGH, N.C. – On Saturday, Sept. 1, the Shaw University football team will begin its 2018 season at Division I, Hampton University in Hampton, Va. Kickoff is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Armstrong Stadium.
The contest marks the 38th meeting between the two programs, the last meeting occurred in 1978 with Hampton winning 24-17 at home.

The Bears are coming off a frustrating 3-7 overall record and 2-5 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) in 2017 under the leadership of head coach Adrian Jones. Shaw fell in three divisional games by a touchdown or less but this season the Bears will be looking to improve its chances of closing out games and hopefulness of returning to the championship game for the first time since 2010.
Shaw heads into the 2018 campaign, picked eighth overall and fourth in the Southern Division during the CIAA Preseason Poll. The Bears return 45 letter winners from a season ago, including junior linebacker Devon Hunt (Hamlet, NC) who led the defense in total tackles with 90 tackles last year. Hunt was named to the All-CIAA Preseason Team and the 2018 Black College Football Player of the Year Award Watch List. In addition to headlining returners, the Bears will also look to count on sophomore linebacker Jaleel Scroggins (Raleigh, NC) who was also named to the All-CIAA Preseason List, he registered 70 tackles, three pass breakups and two interceptions during his freshman season. Offensively, junior wide receiver Marquis Gorham (Greenville, NC) and sophomore receiver Daniel Bender (Jacksonville, FL) combined for 606 receptions yards in 2017.
Hampton wrapped up its 2017 season with a 6-5 overall record and 5-3 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). This season, the Pirates enters its inaugural appearance in the Big South Conference. HU returns 45 letter winners, including seven offensive starters and five defensive starters from a season ago.
Ronald Bell led the offense last season with 674 total receptions yards on 60 catches and seven touchdowns while Delmon Williams completed 135-of-256 passes for 1,757 total yards and 13 touchdowns. Defensively, Oral Varcciann and Davonte Spruill led the Pirates with 39 tackles. Robert Prunty enters his first season at the helm of the football program at Hampton.
