RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University football team opens Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Conference (CIAA) play on Saturday, Sept. 24 when the Bears host the Bulldogs of Bowie State University for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Durham County Memorial Stadium.
Shaw (0-3) suffered its third consecutive loss of the season, as UNC Pembroke rallied in the third quarter to pull out a 38-19 victory on Sept. 17 at Durham County Memorial Stadium. The Bears had the lead at the break (13-10) but started off the third quarter with three back-to-back turnovers, two in which turned into two touchdowns for UNCP. From there, the Braves never relinquished the lead despite a late touchdown from junior running back Rahim Winston, Jr. (Durham, NC) in the fourth quarter.
Offensively, quarterback Darron Downing (Portsmouth, VA) had a breakout performance for the Bears, finishing with 90-yards on the ground and 94 through the air. He also scored two touchdowns but threw two interceptions. Defensively, freshman linebacker Devon Hunt (Rockingham, NC) led the Bears defense with 10 tackles.
Bowie State comes into its CIAA opener with a 1-2 overall record, following a 44-35 loss to Division I (FCS) Central Connecticut State last Saturday. The Bulldogs bring a unique offensive scheme that has proven to be very effective. Robert Chesson leads the way with 270 yards rushing and two touchdowns, while Nyme Manns leads receivers with 464 yards on 26 receptions and four touchdowns. Quarterback Amir Hall has completed 80 passes for 1,112 yards and eight touchdowns in three games for the Bulldogs.
This will be the first meeting between the two teams since 2009. The last meeting between the two teams saw the Bears suffer a 31-24 loss in overtime to the Bulldogs. Shaw leads the all-time series with a 5-4 overall record.
