Shaw University Athletics Hires Emily Thompson as Assistant Athletic Trainer

RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University Athletics is pleased to announce the hiring of Emily Thompson as the new Assistant Athletic Trainer. Emily brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in sports medicine and athlete care to the Bears, further strengthening the Shaw's commitment to providing top-notch support for its student-athletes.

"We are thrilled to welcome Emily Thompson to the Shaw University Athletics family," said George Knox, Shaw University's Athletic Director. "Her dedication to athlete health and her experience will be invaluable as we continue to elevate our athletic programs and ensure the well-being of our student-athletes."

Thompson earned her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Pacific University in May 2023 while playing soccer for the university. Following her undergraduate studies, Emily completed a post-professional Master of Science in Athletic Training from Pacific University in May 2024.

During her academic journey, Emily gained valuable hands-on experience working with Portland State University, Lewis and Clark College, various high schools, and Special Olympics. These experiences enriched her understanding of athletic training and honed her skills in providing comprehensive care to athletes.

Emily's research has focused on practical applications within sports medicine, including investigating the effectiveness of compression sleeves in reducing the effects of delayed onset muscle soreness. Additionally, she conducted research comparing the benefits of a hand-held percussion device versus static stretching in improving hamstring flexibility.

"I am excited to join Shaw University and contribute to the success of the Bears' athletic programs," said Thompson. "I look forward to working with the student-athletes, coaches, and staff to help them achieve their goals on and off the field."
