Lady Bears Reach DII Independent Finals

DURHAM, NC – The Shaw women's soccer team advanced to the Division II Independent Championship finals after throttling Virginia State 4-0 Saturday at Durham County Stadium.

The Lady Bears will take on Edward Waters, who earlier defeated Bluefield State 5-2, in Sunday's championship game at 1:30 p.m. The consolation game pits Virginia State against Bluefield State at 11 a.m.

Shaw (13-4-1 overall) set a season high in wins by using its depth. The contest was scoreless at halftime but the Lady Bears, with an entirely different lineup starting the second half, wore down the Trojans (2-11-2 overall).

Joseline Becerra led the Lady Bears with two goals. Avril Melilo added a goal and an assist and Daricia Arrindell contributed a goal for Shaw, who outshot Virginia State 20-4. Jasmine Brake assisted on one of Becerra's goals and winning goalkeeper Andrea Fernandez finished with one save on four Virginia State shots.

The Lady Bears totaled more corner kicks than the Trojans (4-1). Virginia State were called for 13 fouls compared to nine for Shaw.

This was the third meeting between the Lady Bears and Trojans this season with Shaw winning all three contests. Shaw defeated Edward Waters 1-0 during the regular season.
