SHAW STAFF SPOTLIGHT: FRANTZ-KWAME SMITH

SHAW STAFF SPOTLIGHT: FRANTZ-KWAME SMITH

RALEIGH, N.C. – ShawBears.com will look at members of the Department of Athletics at Shaw University staff with a weekly featured called "ShawBears Staff Spotlight." Each Wednesday, the website will profile a different member of the staff.

In this week's edition, we look at Frantz-Kwame Smith in his second year as the head coach for men's and women's cross country and women's outdoor track and field. Prior to becoming head coach, Smith served the interim role in 2018.

What do you remember about your first day working at Shaw?

Smith: On the first day I soaked it in, being with the institution as a volunteer on the outskirts and then to now be the HEAD Coach seemed surreal. The staff welcomed me and the girls were over the moon that I indeed got the position, we were ready to get to work.

What is one of your favorite memories of working at Shaw?

Smith: Favorite memory was being a part of the tandem with Coach Wayne Hall in the molding of Destinee Williams who at the beginning of the off season had dreams of making the podium at the CIAA Championships, but took on the challenge from us to aspire to the National level. She broke the school record numerous times that season and made it to All-American status. That set the tone as Kaydi-Ann Wint and LaCherie Clarke both kept that quest for excellence going, with their individual wins in dominant fashion.

What does working at Shaw mean to you?

Smith: It signifies that God hears our hearts desire! I prayed for an opportunity to grow, showcase my God given talent and love for the sport, while assisting in the overall development of the athletes I cross paths with. Shaw University has afforded me this opportunity but as I said God orchestrated His plan.

If you were an athlete, what jersey number would you want to wear and why?

Smith: My number has been #5, I was a triple sport athlete in high school and two-sport athlete in college. I fell in love with the number due to my love for defending and in soccer #5 had a list of top defenders associated with it and in basketball I stuck with it as it combines Jordan's jersey numbers. #TheTrueGOAT

Did you play sports in college? If so, what sport and where did you play?

Smith: I played Soccer and ran Track at MidAmerica Nazarene University, MNU. I lettered in both sports honorable mention in soccer and three time All-American in track.
