RALEIGH, N.C. – The Department of Shaw University Athletics will highlight former student-athletes and their accomplishments in their professional careers and the impact they have made on their communities in a monthly segment called the Shaw Student-Athlete Alumni Spotlight.

This month we talked with former women's basketball student-athlete Isayra "Izzy" Diaz '14. Diaz was a member of the 2012 women's basketball team that won Shaw its first national championship in school history.  Additionally, she is also a two-time CIAA champion.

What sport(s) did you play at Shaw?

Diaz: Women's Basketball


What year did you graduate?

Diaz: 2014


What was your major(s)/minor(s) at Shaw:

Diaz: Exercise Science


Have you obtained a higher level of education since graduating from Shaw?

Diaz: Yes, Masters in Sport Administration from Grambling State University


Where is your current place of employment?

Diaz: Assistant women's basketball coach at Grambling State University


Why did you choose to attend Shaw?

Diaz: I chose Shaw because the rich tradition and the winning basketball program. Best decision I've made is attending an HBCU


What is your fondest memory of being a Shaw student-athlete?

Diaz: Winning 2 CIAA championships back to back and winning a National Championship in 2012


What would you say is your greatest athletic or academic accomplishment during your time at Shaw?

Diaz: My greatest athletic accomplishment is winning rings and getting better every day. My greatest academic accomplishment is graduating from this HBCU


What kind of advice would you give to current Saints competing in athletics?

Diaz: Continue the winning tradition at Shaw University and get a degree
