RALEIGH, N.C. – will look at members of the Department of Athletics at Shaw University staff with a weekly featured called "ShawBears Staff Spotlight." Each Wednesday, the website will profile a different member of the staff.

In this week's edition, we look at Jessica Hawkins in his sixth year as an assistant coach for the women's basketball team.

What do you remember about your first day working at Shaw?

Hawkins: It was good to be back!

What is one of your favorite memories of working at Shaw?

Hawkins: Riding the bus to the CIAA championship game in 2016 with police escorts.

What does working at Shaw mean to you?

Hawkins: It is an honor and privilege to work at my alma mater. I would love the athletes to experience what I did as an athlete and more.

If you were an athlete, what jersey number would you want to wear and why?

Hawkins: My jersey would be #20. I would select #20 because my favorite athlete growing up was Marion Jones. She wore #20 while playing basketball at UNC.

Did you play sports in college? If so, what sport and where did you play?

Hawkins: Yes, basketball and track. I am former Lady Bear and during my time at Shaw I won three CIAA championships, All-CIAA accolades, CIAA Player of the Year as well as Defensive Player of the Year.
