RALEIGH, N.C. – ShawBears.com will look at members of the Department of Athletics at Shaw University staff with a weekly featured called "ShawBears Staff Spotlight." Each Wednesday, the website will profile a different member of the staff.
In this week's edition, we look at David Mills in his 28th year as the Director of Sports Medicine for Athletics.
What do you remember about your first day working at Shaw?
Mills: 28 years ago, I simply volunteered my time working with SU and Saint. Augustine's, introducing them to Sports Medicine. I have spent 28 years at Shaw, now operating for a stipend while I have spent 12 years at St. Aug and have staffed up to now.
What is one of your favorite memories of working at Shaw?
Mills: Championships with both men's and women's basketball and football. I have around 12-13 CIAA championship rings from Shaw and one national championship ring from Saint Augustine's.
What does working at Shaw mean to you?
Mills: Having the ability to work with others that look like was important. I have worked with the USISL, Pro Soccer, Cary Orthopedics, CIAA championships, ACC, Professional Sports Medicine (my own business), NCSU, Cardinal Gibbons High School, NFL (NY Jets), etc.
If you were an athlete, what jersey number would you want to wear and why?
Mills: Ronald "Flip" Murray, I am his biggest fan! I remember when he came to Shaw and his serious injury. Great guy! I have his number 22 Seattle Super Sonic jersey on the wall in my office.
Did you play sports in college? If so, what sport and where did you play?
Mills: I have only operated in Sports Medicine. I had the opportunity to meet with the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns and Green Bay Packers. However, I did work with the NY Jets.
