SHAW ATHLETICS CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH: DENISE CRAIG

RALEIGH, N.C. – Who was the first women's basketball player at Shaw to get drafted into the professional rankings?

 

Denise Craig was the first women's basketball player to get drafted by a professional league. During her playing days at Shaw, Craig held many records while also leading the Lady Bears into the 1976 CIAA Women's Tournament. She scored 40 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in the championship game. Additionally, in the NCAIAW tournament, Craig recorded 40 points and 33 rebounds.

A member of the Shaw Athletic Hall of Fame, Craig was inducted into the CIAA Hall of Fame in 1999. She was the recipient of the "Trailblazer Of The Year Award" from the Women's Basketball Hall Of Fall 2018 for playing in the WBL, competed in the WBL (Women's Professional Basketball League) which was the first professional basketball league for women, pre-dating the WNBA. She won championship with the New York Stars during the 1979-80 season.
