SHAW ATHLETICS CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH: JAMES “BONECRUSHER”SMITH

RALEIGH, N.C. –  Who was the first ever college graduate to win the Heavyweight Championship in boxing?

 

James "Bonecrusher" Smith was a transfer to Shaw in 1975 where he played football and basketball for the Bears. When he entered the military his interest sports continued but it changed to boxing. He was an All-Army boxer in the Heavyweight class with a record of 35-4 as an amateur.

 

In 1986, Smith became the first college graduate to win a Heavyweight Championship in boxing, defeating Tim Witherspoon. Smith is a member of the Shaw Athletic Hall Of Fame.
