Three Named All-CIAA
Three members of the Shaw volleyball team were named to the 2004 All-Conference team.  Seniors Kalia Quarles and Andradese Rozier were named to the first team, while sophomore Jessica Perry was named to the second team.

Quarles, the setter and a native of Cleveland, OH has led the Lady Bears in set assists all four seasons at Shaw.  She was voted CIAA Rookie of the Year in 2001.  Rozier, a middle hitter from St. Paul's, NC leads the team in blocks.  Perry, a native of Henderson, NC is second on the team in kills.

Lady Bears are Victorious over Saint Paul's College
The Lady Bears trampled the Lady Tigers of Saint Paul's College  3-0 (30-8, 30-11, 30-9). Carletta Harrell had 16 kills with two digs. Jessica Perry had 11 kills and 1 dig while Kalia Quarles and Andradese Rozier both ended the game with 5 kills. 

The Lady Bears will play in the CIAA Championships on November 5,2004. So come out and support the Lady Bears in your Shaw colors.

Lady Bears Fall to St. Augustine's
The Lady Bears suffered yet another defeat, falling to the Lady Falcons of St. Augustine 1-3 (30-24, 16-30, 18-30, 21-30). Kalia Quarles ended the game with 29 assists while both Carletta Harrell and Jessica Perry came away with 13kills and 8 digs a piece.

Come out and support the Lady Bears at the CIAA Tournament on Friday, November 5,2004.

Lady Bears Fall to Virginia Union 
The Shaw Lady Bears (5-12) fell to Lady Panthers of Virginia Union (15-4) in a 4 set match that ended 3-1 (30-26, 18-30, 24-30, 25-30). Carletta Harrell ended the game with 14 kills while Kalia Quarles ended the game with 27 assists and Tiffany Barnes with 10 digs. 

Come out and support the Lady Bears as they face the Trojans of Mount Olive on October 30, 2004 at Mount Olive.

Lady Bears Resume their Winning Plan 
After experiencing an unfortunate set back on the 26th of October, the Lady Bears resumes their original game plan and therefore came away with the win over the Lady Tigers of  St. Paul's 3-0 (30-12,30-13, 30-5). Carletta Harrell came away with 14 kills and five digs followed by Jessica Perry with 12 kills while Kalia Quarles ended the game with 28 assists.  

Come out and support the Lady Bears as they face the Lady Panthers of Virginia  Union on October 28,2004 at 6:00pm in the Spaulding Gymnasium.

Lady Bears Fall to the Lady Trojans
The Lady bears fell to the Lady Trojans of Virginia State at the Spaulding Gymnasium in an unbelievable 5 set match that ended 2-3 (30-28, 30-25, 27-30, 23-30, 11-15). Carletta Harrell ended the game with 20 kills and 12 digs, followed by Jessica Perry with 17 kills and 11 digs. Kalia Quarles came away with 41 assists, Syreeta Mason and Valencia McCall also ended the game marvelously with 14 and 13 digs respectively. 

Come out and support the Lady Bears on Thursday October 27, 2004 at 6:00pm as they face the Lady Panthers of St. Paul's.

Lady Bears Continue on the Road to Victory
Saturday's win over the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State has officially set the Lady Bears back on their road to victory. The Lady Bears after losing the first set came back to win 3-1 (23-30,30-18,30-27,30,18). Jessica Perry headed the Lady Bears pack with 14 kills and 13 digs. Kalia Quarles also ended the game in a dignified manner with 24 attacks and 6 digs. 

Come out and support the Lady Bears on Tuesday October 26, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. as they face the Lady Trojans of Virginia State.

Lady Bears Are again Victorious
The Lady Bears regrouped themselves after losing the previous two games to gain a 3-2 (30-20,30-24,29-31,25-30,15-7) victory against in-state rival Elizabeth City State, Thursday.  Carletta Harrell finished the game with  23 kills with 9 digs. Jessica Perry finished with 17 digs while Tiffany Barnes ended the game remarkably with a total of 9 digs.

Come out and support the revitalized Lady Bears as they face the Bulldogs of Bowie State on Friday October 22, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. at the Spaulding Gymnasium

Lady Bears Are defeated once again
The Lady Bears suffered yet another defeat, this time against the Lady Falcons of Fayetteville State in a 3 game match (23-30, 17-30, 15-30). Jessica Perry managed to come away with 5 kills and 5 attacks. Carletta Harrell had 4 kills and 4 digs. And Andradese Rozier finished the game with 4 digs.

Come out and support the lady Bears on Thursday October 14,2004 at 6:00 p.m. as they face the lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State.

Lady Bears Are defeated Against the Lady Eagles
The Lady Bears lost a 3 game match (20-30, 24-30, 21-30) to the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central. Although the Lady Bears suffered a defeat, Jessica Perry finished the game with 12 kills and seven digs. Teleda Coakley also had six digs. Carletta Harrell finished the game with eight kills.  

Come out and support the Lady Bears on Tuesday October 12, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. as they face the Falcons of Fayetteville State.

Lady Bears lost to the Lady Trojans
The Lady Bears lost to Lady Trojans of Mount Olive 3-0 at the Spaulding Gymnasium. The Lady Bears (4-9) played the first and second games close, losing by just 6 points (30-24) and 9 points (30-21), respectively. Mount Olive (16-7) however controlled the final game and ended up with a 30-14 decision. Jessica Perry ended the game with 12 kills, Kalia Quarles with 23 assists and Syreeta Mason had 6 digs.

Lady Bears Win Against Lady Bulldogs
On Thursday September 30, 2004, the Lady Bears won a 3-2 (23-30, 30-17, 31-29, 23-30, 15-6) match against the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University. Carletta Harrell led the Lady Bears with 28 kills while Jessica Perry had 23 kills. Perry also finished the game with 18 digs and Valencia McCall ended the game with 16 total attacks.

Come out and support the Lady Bears as they face the Trojans on Tuesday October 5, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. in Spalding Gymnasium.

Lady Bears Lose Season Opener

The Shaw volleyball team fought hard against Winston-Salem State but fell to the Lady Rams 1-3 (23-30, 28-30, 30-23, 17-30) at Whitaker Gymnasium. Both Charletta Harrell and Jessica Perry  led the Lady Bears with 13 kills a piece. Tiffany Barnes came through with 21 digs while Syreeta Mason finished with 13 digs. Kalia Quarles also finished out the game with 37 assists.

The Lady Bears will have their next game on Wednesday  September 8, 2004 at 6pm where they will go up against Elizabeth City State in Elizabeth City, NC.

Season Opener Postponed
The Shaw volleyball season opener against Mount Olive, scheduled for August 26 at 6:00 p.m. at Spaulding Gymnasium has been postponed until further notice.  The Lady Bears will open up the season on September 1 when they travel to Winston-Salem State to take on the Lady Rams at 6:00 p.m.

Aker Named Head Volleyball, Softball Coach
Shaw University has named Laura Aker as its new head volleyball and softball coach.  Aker replaces Dianthia Ford-Kee, who has been the head volleyball and softball coach the last 14 years, after she was named associate athletics director in June.  Read more

Lady Bears Lose in Championships
DURHAM - The Shaw volleyball team lost in the first round of the 2003 CIAA Championships.  Shaw lost its first match to western division opponent #4 Winston-Salem St. 3-1 (30-27, 26-30, 28-30, 26-30).  The Lady Bears rebounded in their second match defeating Virginia Union 3-0 (30-23, 30-19, 30-25).  The Lady Bears season was ended at the hands of North Carolina Central 3-0 (20-30, 13-30, 15-30).

Lady Bears #1 Seed in East; Will take on #4 Seed in West in First Round
The Shaw volleyball team, 2003 CIAA eastern division champions and number one seed out of the east will take on Winston-Salem State in Pool A in the first round of the in the 2003 CIAA volleyball tournament on the campus of North Carolina Central at the Walker Complex at 11:00 a.m. on Friday.  The Lady Bears would then take on Virginia Union. seeded third in the east at 3:00 p.m. and then North Carolina Central, second in the west at 7:00 p.m.

Should the Lady Bears advance out of Pool A, they would face the second or first place finisher in Pool B at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.  The championship game is Sunday at 10:00 a.m.

Shaw is 0-1 against Winston-Salem State, 2-0 against Virginia Union and 0-1 against North Carolina Central this season.

Goree, Quarles Named first team, Harrell Named second team
The Shaw volleyball team had three players named to the 2003 All-CIAA volleyball team.  Outside hitter Dishondra Goree, a senior from Fort Wayne, IN has 207 kills and 166 digs.  Setter Kalia Quarles, a junior from Cleveland, OH, leads the team in assists )551) and has 103 digs.

Newcomer outside hitter Carletta Harrell, a junior from Cleveland, leads the team in kills (240) and has been a welcomed addition to this year's team, which won the CIAA eastern division for the third-straight year.

Shaw loses Clash Of The Champions
The CIAA eastern division champion Shaw volleyball team fell 0-3 (18-30, 25-30, 9-30) to western division champion St. Augustine's.  

In the first game the Lady Falcons won 30-18 but the Lady Bears would not go down without a fight in their last home match of the season playing the Lady Falcons close in game two but eventually falling 30-25. The Lady Falcons won game three 30-9. 

Bria Johnson led the Lady Bears attack against a stiff Lady Falcons defense with three kills. Evangeline Hunt led the defensive side with seven digs. 

Shaw now prepares for the 2003 CIAA Tournament being held November 13-16 in Durham.  The Lady Bears will go in as the number one seed from the west.

Note: It was senior day as three Lady Bear seniors were honored.  At the picture above from right to left are: Evangeline Hunt, Amina McGhee and Dishondra Goree.  The Lady Bears played there last home game.

Lady Bears Win Eastern Division
The Lady Bears have clinched the Eastern Division crown with a  victory tonight in Spaulding Gymnasium over Virginia Union in a three game set. The Lady Bears will conclude the regular season on Monday November 10th when they play host to arch rival St. Augustine's College at 6:00pm in Spaulding Gymnasium.

Lady Bears Fight Hard but Fall to Trojans
The Shaw women's volleyball team fought hard against Mount Olive but fell to the Trojans 3-0 (32-28, 30-21, 30-17) in Spaulding Gymnasium.

The Lady Bears (11-12) led for most of the first game as Carletta Harrell was instrumental in the Shaw leading the majority of the game.  She had eight kills in the game.  The Lady Bears led 27-25 but couldn't finish off the Trojans and fell 32-28.  In game two, Shaw found its self down early 19-8, but made a valiant comeback coming with in four points with brilliant defense and timely hitting , but again fell short losing 30-21.

For the match Harrell led the Lady Bears with 13 kills.  Heidi Busch led the Trojans with 14 kills.

The Lady Bears will be in action tomorrow night as the CIAA eastern division championship will be on the line when they take on the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union.

Lady Bears Fall in Five To Lady Rams
The Lady Bears fell short in a five game thriller versus Winston-Salem State University last night at Whitaker Gymnasium.

The Lady Bears did not go down with out a fight as Dishondra Goree had 22 kills and 15 digs, Syreeta Mason had 13 kills and 24 digs, and Bria Johnson finished with 10 kills as the Lady Bears fell by scores of 30-26,14-30,30-24,16-30,and 15-17.

The Lady Bears overall record drops to 11-11and 10-4 in the conference. The women will next play Mount Olive on November 4th at Spaulding Gymnasium.

Lady Bears Beat Lady Tigers
The Shaw volleyball quickly disposed of the Lady Tigers of St. Paul's College in three games with scores of 30-25,30-27, and 30-9. Carletta Harrell led the team in kills with 10 and digs with five. The team improves to 11-8, 10-1 in the conference.

Lady Bears Lose To Virginia State
The Shaw women's volleyball team loss their first division game tonight in a five game set with Virginia State 25-30,30-28,30-32,30-24,18-16.DiShondra Goree and Carletta Harrell lead the Lady Bears. Goree finished the game with 10 kills and 11 digs. Harrell added 17 kills and 4 digs. Also Kalia Quarles had 41 assists. The Lady Bears will play again  Monday October 27th at Spaulding Gym against St. Paul's College.

Shaw Wins Two Games in One Day
The Shaw University volleyball team defeated two opponents at two different sites on Tuesday. The first victim was Johnson C. Smith, the Lady Bears spiked the Lady Golden Bulls in four games with scores of 14-30, 34-32, 33-31,and 30-26. Then the Lady Bears boarded the bus to depart from Charlotte, NC back  to Raleigh but made a quick  stop in Salisbury, NC to play the Lady Blue Bears of Livingstone College defeating the Lady Blue Bears in three games 30-15, 30-14, and 30-23.

This improves the Lady Bears conference record to 8-1 and their overall record to 9-8. The Lady Bears will host Bowie State tomorrow at 6:00 in Spaulding Gymnasium.

Lady Bears Remain Unbeaten in Division
The Shaw volleyball team made quick work of Elizabeth City State and remained unbeaten in the CIAA's eastern division.  The Lady Bears beat the Lady Vikings 3-0 (30-15, 30-13, 30-12).  Shaw is now 7-8 overall, 6-1 in the CIAA and 6-0 in the east.

Lady Bears Remain Unbeaten in Division
The Lady Bears remained unbeaten in the Eastern Division as they defeated the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union in a three game set last night.

It was Bria Johnson who led the Lady Bears with a solid all-round performance. Johnson finished the game with 10 kills, 4  Service Aces, and 11digs. Carletta Harrell had 13 kills, one shy of the game high. Tiffany Barnes led the defensive attack finishing the game with 13 digs and Evangeline Hunt added 10.

The Lady Bears will host Elizabeth City State University tomorrow night in their first home game of the season.

Lady Bears Lose to Belmont Abbey
A shawbears.com  report in a story last week that the volleyball team defeated Belmont Abbey was incorrect. The Lady Bears were defeated  3-1 on September 30th.

Lady Bears Remain Undefeated In Conference Play
The  Shaw Lady Bears volleyball team is 4-0 in conference play, as they defeated the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State last Thursday in three games 30 to 17, 30 to 18 , and 30 to 21.

Leading the way for the Lady Bears was  Carletta Harrell who had 14 kills and Dishondra Goree who had 13. On the defensive side it was Lowleita Davis who finished the match with 16 digs to lead all players.  Kalia Quarles had 32 assist and 4 kills as the Lady Bears improved their overall record to 5-3.

The Bears will take the court again today as they travel to Belmont, NC to take on Belmont Abbey in non-conference action.

Shaw University Improves to 3-0 in Conference Play
The  Shaw Lady Bear volleyball team beat the Lady Trojans of Virginia State University 3-1 in Eastern division play.

It was Dishondra Goree who sparked the Lady Bears with a solid  all- round  performance. Goree tallied 16 kills and 14 digs. Newcomer Carletta Harrell also had a good all- round game with 14 kills and 9 digs. Kalia Quarles helped lead the offensive attack with 45 assist and Lowletia Davis added 27 digs on the defensive end.

The Lady Bears were scheduled to compete at the CIAA round-up this weekend in Fayetteville, NC but the round up has been moved to next weekend September 26-28 due to Hurricane Isabel. The Lady Bears will be in action on September 24th at Virginia Union.

Lady Bears Win First Conference Game
The Shaw volleyball team recorded it's first conference victory of the season last night in a three-game sweep against the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University 30-13, 30-25, 30-14.

The Lady Bears (2-3) were led by Carletta Harrell who had 15 kills  and Kalia Quarles and Jessica Perry who had 13 and 17 assists, respectively. Dishondra Ghoree  was the team leader defensively finishing the game with eight digs and Lowleita Davis chipped in with seven.

The Lady Bears will take the court again Thursday night when they take on the  Lady Tigers at St. Paul's University at 6:00 p.m.

Lady Bears Compete in Tournament
                                
The Shaw volleyball team opened the 2003 season in Boca Raton, FL, finishing 1-3 in the Lynn University Tournament last weekend.

In the first game of the tournament Shaw squared off against the University of Charleston. The Lady Bears totaled 26 kills as a team in the three game set. Leading the way for the Lady Bears was senior Dishondra Goree and junior Carletta Harrell, who each had seven kills and  freshman Jessica Perry who chipped in with six. Defensively, it was sophomore Lowletia Davis who led the team with 15 of the teams 52 digs. Goree and senior Evangeline Hunt each had 10 digs. But this would not be enough as the Lady Bears would lose to Charleston in three straight sets.

The Lady Bears first win of the season would come against Glennville St. University in three straight sets 30-16,30- 20, 30-22.  Harrell led the offensive attack with 19 kills, followed by Perry with 12. On the defensive side, it was Junior Kalia Quarles who had 11 digs.  She also finished the game with 30 assists.

The Lady Bears lost two more games in the tournament against West Florida University and West Virginia State College. Overall the women finished the tournament with a record of 1-3

Shaw will next be in action on September 9th when they travel to Elizabeth City to take on the Lady Vikings.

Lady Bears Prepare for CIAA Championships

The Shaw volleyball team, which finished the regular season by winning the CIAA eastern division crown, will be in action starting tomorrow at the CIAA Volleyball Championships in Winston Salem, NC.  The Lady Bears are seeded first in Pool A and will face #4Fayetteville State, #3Virginia Union and #2North Carolina Central, tomorrow at 11:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., respectively.  If the Lady Bears finish first or second in the Pool A, they will advance to play the first or second place winner in Pool B in the semi-finals on Saturday November 16 at 10:00 a.m.  The Championship game is Sunday November 17 at 10:00 a.m.

The participants in pool B include #1St. Augustine’s, #2Virginia State, #3Winston-Salem State and #4Bowie State.

The Lady Bears are currently 15-10 overall and 12-7 against all CIAA opponents, 9-1 in the eastern division.

Riley, Pelzer Named All-CIAA

Shaw University volleyball players Britanya Riley and Asiyah Pelzer have been named second team All-CIAA as voted by the CIAA volleyball coaches.

Riley, a senior from Pensacola, FL leads the Lady Bears in kills (247) and hitting percentage (.312).  Pelzer, a senior from Cleveland, OH and one of the leagues better all-around players, has 118 kills, 352 assists, 65 digs and 46 total blocks.

The Lady Bears have won the CIAA eastern division for the second straight season.

Johnson, Ford-Kee Named Rookie, Coach of the Week
Bria Johnson and Shaw head volleyball coach Dianthia Ford-Kee have been named CIAA Rookie and Coach of the Week, respectively. Johnson, a freshman outside hitter from Wharton, TX finished last week with 21 kills, a hitting percentage of .375, three service aces and 12 digs in two games.

Ford-Kee, who has compiled a 218-130 record in 13 seasons as head coach of the Lady Bears, led the Lady Bears to two wins versus Virginia State (10/28) and Elizabeth City State (10/30). The win over Virginia State, put the Lady Bears in the drivers seat in the CIAA eastern division, and allowed Shaw to claim the eastern division crown for the second straight season.

Shaw Wins in Three; Eastern Division Crown
The Shaw volleyball team beat St. Paul’s 3-0 (30-6, 30-16, 30-18) before a crowd of 201 at Spaulding Gymnasium. The win gives the Lady Bears the CIAA eastern division crown for the second straight season and a number one seed in the CIAA tournament November 15-17 in Winston-Salem.

It was senior night for the Lady Bears as Britanya Riley and Asiyah Pelzer played their last game in Spaulding Gymnasium. Riley had 13 kills and Pelzer 16 assists and two solo blocks.

Kalia Quarles had 17 assists and six aces.

The Lady Bears finish out the season with a game Thursday at Mount Olive and next Monday at St. Augustine’s.

Shaw Wins in Three; Needs One Victory for Championship
RALEIGH - The Shaw volleyball team beat Elizabeth City State 3-0 (30-22, 30-11, 30-21) before a crowd of 176 at Spaulding Gymnasium. The win means that Shaw needs a victory over St. Paul's on Monday to claim its second straight CIAA eastern division crown. Senior Britanya Riley led the Lady Bears with 14 kills. Kalia Quarles had 19 assists.


Shaw Wins in Four; Forces Tie for First in Eastern Division
RALEIGH - The Shaw volleyball team defeated Virginia State tonight 3-1 (30-22, 26-30, 30-23, 30-27) before a crowd of 152 at Spaulding Gymnasium. The win ties the Lady Bears (13-8, 7-1 in eastern division) with Virginia State (12-11, 7-1 in eastern division) for first place in the CIAA eastern division. Go To Story

LADY BEARS DEFEAT VIRGINIA UNION
Raleigh, NC - Lady Bears Defeat Virginia Union 3-0 (30-15, 30-25, 3--19). The Lady Bears have a pivotal matchup against Virginia State on Monday at 6:00 p.m. in Spaulding Gymnasium.


LADY BEARS WIN FOURTH STRAIGHT
Lawrenceville, VA - The Shaw University Volleyball team allowed only 20 points in three games to beat St. Paul's 3-0 (30-2, 30-9, 30-9) to win its fourth straight conference game in Lawrenceville, Va. Go To Story
