Shaw NEST LADY FALCONS IN SEASON FINALE
October 30, 2007 –
Raleigh, NC –
The Shaw University Lady Bears tracked into C.C.
Spaulding Gymnasium for their final regular season game against cross-town
rival, the Lady Falcons on Saint Augustine’s College. Before a sellout
crowd, the Lady Bears subjugated SAC for a 3 – 0 sweep.
Prior
to the start of match one, Shaw University paused to shine the spotlight on
student-athletes that were currently in their senior year of athletic
eligibility. The special guests of honor were as followed: Kim Moore
(Volleyball / Middle Hitter / International Relations / Bayshore, NY),
Cheryl Salter (Volleyball / #8 / Setter / Biology / Alexander, AL), Rachel
Walters (Volleyball / #0 / #7 / Middle Hitter / Accounting / Trinidad and
Tobago), Lakida Whetstone (Volleyball / #15 / Outside Hitter / Athletic
Training / Alexander, AL), Michelle Moore (Bowling / #5 / Anchor Position /
Recreation / Baltimore, MD), and Marc Allen (Cross Country /
Sociology/Criminal Justice / District Heights, MD). Certainly, we extend
further congratulations to those individuals for excellence as academic and
athletic representatives of Shaw University.
In the
initial match, Shaw was speechless with the Lady Falcons’ swift flapping to
a 6 – 3 lead. However, the Lady Bears clawed back to take the lead 8 – 6.
SAC unexpectedly stepped back to tie the game 15 – 15 and force Shaw to
motion to the sidelines for their first sixty second breather. Shaw loosened
the noose in the tie to lead by three, but SAC threatened with a convincing
comeback to re-tie the game at 24, 25, and 27. Fortunately, Shaw preserved
perfect pose to conclude the match for a 30 – 28 win.
Shaw
stepped into match two on the right paw for a 2 – 0 lead. The Lady Bears
continued to play with finesse on their finger-tips to be in the forefront
15 – 11. Unfortunately after a timely taken timeout, SAC knotted the game 25
– 25. Shaw ignored their small scare to collect their second win in match
two, 30 – 26.
“Taking
care of business” seemed to be Shaw’s unspoken theme of the evening. The
Lady Bears opened up the final match with an 8 – 1 point margin advantage.
Shaw suffocated SAC’s defense with forceful driven spikes and greeted their
offense with skyscrapers to deny scoring attempts. The crowd clamorously
cheered on the home team as the Lady Falcons took their second timeout as
Shaw led 23 – 17. The Lady Bears finished match three with a 30 – 21
victory.
Leading
the Lady Bears in kills was #1 Sharetta Riggins (Middle Hitter / Junior /
Kinesiotherapy) and #4 Dominique Smith (Libero / Junior / Psychology) with a
team high ten kills and eight digs. In addition, Riggins led the team with a
team high four serving aces and one block. Also, #8 Cheryl Salter (Setter /
Senior / Biology) collected a game high 34 set assists and a tied team high
eight digs.
The Shaw University Lady Bears will go back into practice mode before they travel to Charlotte, NC on November 8th – 11th to compete in the 2007 CIAA Volleyball Championships.
