Shaw Downed by
Fayetteville in Western
Division Dual
October 17, 2007
–
Raleigh, NC –
Little did fans know
that freshly polished
hardwood floors in C.C.
Spalding Gymnasium would
be converted into tense
turf for a western
division showdown. The
number two seeded Shaw
University Lady Bears (9
– 8 Overall, 9 – 2 CIAA,
4 – 1 Division) tightly
laced up their NikeŽ
athletic footwear as
they hosted the
undefeated and number
one seeded Lady Broncos
of Fayetteville State
University (15 – 10
Overall, 9 – 0 CIAA, 4 –
0 Division).The
serve-for-serve shootout
ceased with the Lady
Bears being defeated by
FSU 3 – 0 for the loss.
At
the beginning of the
first match, the Lady
Bears and Lady Broncos
kept the heads of the
attending Shaw
supporters swiftly
swaying back and forth
while they participated
in vigorous competitive
play. FSU loosened a 9 –
9 knot to lead 13 – 9
and force the Lady Bears
to take their first
timeout. Then, the Lady
Broncos busted open the
match with a 12 – 4
scoring spurt to gallop
out in front 26 – 14.
FSU closed out the
initial match winning 30
– 15.
It is often stated that
if you do not at first
succeed, then try again.
The Lady Bears
maintained a positive
prospective at the start
of the second match.
Shaw rapidly resurrected
from trailing 1 – 3 to
flush FSU for a 10 – 7
lead and convince their
opponents to take their
first timeout.
Nevertheless, the Lady
Broncos bullied their
way back to tie the
match at 17 all. Shaw
requested for their own
sixty-second breather
after FSU flourished to
a 20 – 17. Shaw
presented a very valiant
effort in the final
serves of match two, but
could not short-circuit
the scoring surge of FSU.
The second match
concluded with the Lady
Broncos preceding the
Lady Bears 30 – 23.
The third match began
with Shaw and FSU
resuming their rocking
chair motion of play.
The home team lassoed
the Lady Broncos for a
14 – 9 lead. FSU
surfaced back to take
the lead. Shaw’s Head
Coach Laura Aker called
for a timeout after the
match was tied on
several different
occasions. The Lady
Bears were just a few
scores shy of extending
the game into
“overtime,” but the Lady
Broncos stole the final
match with a 30 – 28
triumph.
Leading the Shaw
University Lady Bears
was #1 Sharetta
Riggins (Middle Hitter /
Junior / Kinesiotherapy)
as she totaled 10 kills
and six digs. Also,
#8 Cheryl Salter (Setter
/ Senior / Biology)
recorded a team high 21
set assists.
