Top Livingstone In Five Game Thriller

– The Shaw University Lady Bears got their first win of the season in a five
game thriller over Livingstone College 3-2 (30-26, 22-30, 30-28, 28-30 and
15-12) in the final rally game. The win improved SU to 1-1 over-all and 1-1
in the CIAA, while LC took their first loss of the season and dropped to 2-1
and 0-1 in the CIAA.
Each game went down to the wire with SU winning first as Dominique Smith (SO/Birmingham, AL) finished with four kills and 14 total attacks. LC bounced back in the second game, cutting down on their errors for a 30-22 win. SU regained the match lead in the third game as Smith, Lakida Whetstone (JR/Alexander, VA) and Jessica Perry (SR/Henderson, NC) produced solid play. Smith totaled six kills, while Whetstone and Perry had four each. LC tied the match at 2-2, with a 30-28 win in game four. LC’s Lina Brown (Norfolk, VA) and Charian Jordan (Nassau, Bahamas) totaled four kills each while Charma Johnson (Nassau, Bahamas) added three. In the rally game, which ends at 15 points instead of 30, LC committed eight attack errors while SU totaled three and won the game 15-12 given them the match victory.
Leading SU in the match was Perry with 14 kills and 34 total attacks, Smith finished with 13 kills and 44 attacks, three service aces and four digs, Whetstone added 13 kills and 35 attacks and Cheryl Salter (JR/Alexander City, AL) finished with a match leading 17 set assists.
Pacing LC was Line Brown with 13 kills and 18 attacks, along with two solo blocks and three assisted. Tia Charlow (Nassau Bahamas) finished with 10 kills and 24 attacks and Johnson finished with 10 kills and 29 attacks, along with five service aces, two digs and two block assists.
The Lady Bears will return to action on Tuesday, September 12 in their home opener against CIAA Eastern Division rival St. Paul’s College at 6:00 PM in Spaulding Gymnasium.
