Simmons Finishes Seventh, Named All-American
Yvette Simmons, a sophomore from
Newport News, VA, completed a great indoor track season by
finishing seventh in the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field
Championships Women's Triple Jump in Boston, MA. Simmons entered
the meet ranked 10th, completed the meet with a jump of 11.78m
(38-7 3/4). Simmons finished runner-up in the CIAA Women's
Long jump and Triple Jump. Yvette Simmons becomes the third Track
All-American in five years.

Simmons Ranked Fifth in Division II
Yvette Simmons, a sophomore from
Newport News, Virginia is currently ranked #5 in the Division II
Women's Long Jump 18-10 1/4 and #9 in the Women's Triple Jump at
39- 1/4. She recently was second in the CIAA Indoor Track and
Field Championships in both events.

Women Finish Runner-Ups at CIAA Championships
The Shaw women's indoor track and field team finished
runner-ups, tied with Virginia State in the CIAA Indoor Track
and Field Championships in Newport News, VA. Top finishers
for the Lady Bears included Patricia Beckham third in the
800-meter run, Yashica Short second in the high jump and Yevette
Simmons second in the long and triple jumps. Click here

Montague Named Coach of the Year
Shaw head track and field coach
William Montague was named CIAA Women's Outdoor Track and Field
Coach of the Year as the Lady Bears finished second in this
year's championship. Shaw finished fourth last season.

Shaw Competes in Historic Penn Relays
Philadelphia, PA--
Shaw University men’s and women’s track and field teams competed
at the 109th running of the Penn Relays at the University
of Pennsylvania along side of some of the fastest athletes in the
world.
The Lady Bears were up on
the track first as they ran on the first day of the meet which was
Thursday, April 24. The first event was the 4x100 meter relay that
clocked in at 49.55. The team consisted of seniors Lisa Bradsher,
Asiyah Pelzer, Ife' Moore and sophomore Candis Johnson. In the
afternoon session of day one the women ran 3:56.83 in the 1600-meter
relay. The team anchored by Pelzer consisted of Bradsher, Johnson
and freshman Patricia Beckham. Highlights from day one included a
female from Long Beach Poly High School in California clocking in at
the a 51.3 split on the anchor leg of the 1600 meter relay,
recording the fastest split in Penn Relays’ history.
On day two of the meet the
men’s team was first up on the track in the 4x100 meter relay
running a disappointing 45.14 due to injuries and bad exchanges. The
team consisted of David McIntrye , Stanley Knox, Aaron Montague ,
and Anthony Connelly. Connelly, Knox, McIntrye, and DeSean Williams
would run the 4x 200-meter relay also in the mourning session
finishing with a time of 1:32.66. Johnson, Moore, Pelzer, and
Bradsher ran the 4-x200 meter relay for the women running a 1:43.49.
In the night session the men ran the 1600-meter relay and the
1600-meter sprint medley relay running 3:24.25 and 3:4.41
respectively. Running the 1600-meter relay was Jeffrey Jackson,
Montague, Williams, and Connelly. On the sprint medley Jackson,
Knox, and McIntrye were joined by Maurice Styles Jr. to finish out
the meet.
On the final day of the
meet the Shaw University track and field teams relaxed in the stands
as a part of a crowd of nearly 40,000 raging track and field fans
watch the USA vs. the World. The segment of the meet was sponsored
by Nike and put some of the top American sprinter against relay
teams from other countries such as Jamaica and Russia. The highlight
of the day was the appearance of the Worlds Fastest Man Tim
Montgomery, as he anchored the USA to victory in the 4x 100-meter
relay.

Lady Bears Finish Second in Championships
The Shaw women's outdoor track and
field team finished tied for second with Virginia State at the CIAA
Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Both teams finished
behind champion St. Augustine's with 95 points. For complete

Lady Bears Compete at Norfolk Relays
NORFOLK , VA-- The Shaw University Lady
Bears competed at the Norfolk State Invitational Relays this past
weekend, among a field of historically
black colleges that included Norfolk State University, Hampton
University, Delaware State University, and University of
Maryland Eastern Shore.
The meet started on a cold rainy Friday were the Lady Bears placed
two women in the top eight of the 400 meter hurdles. Senior Asiyah
Pelzer placed fifth with a time of 1:10.16 followed by Lisa
Bradsher who finished eighth with a time of 1:16.77. The
hurdles being the only event of the day for the Lady Bears, they
would rest as other teams competed in distance races and the
Distance Medley Relay. On
Saturday, senior Ife' Moore ran a 27.02 in the 200 meters for
an eighth place finish. In the 800 meters freshman Patricia Beckham sprinted
to a fifth place finish after a sluggish start with a time of
2:25.81.
Another one of Shaw's super freshman Tania Coleman ran a 5:22 in the
1500, enough to earn her a top eight finish. In the relays
Bradsher, Coleman, Beckham and Pelzer ran a 4:09 in the 1600 meter
relay to finish second. The Lady Bears also finished second in the
sprint medley with the team of Moore, Bradsher , Pelzer, and
Coleman. In the field events Pelzer and Adrain Starks took second
and third, respectively with jumps of 5'0 and 4'10. The
Lady Bears next meet will be the CIAA championships April 17-18 at Johnson C.
Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Lady Bears Win Livingstone Freeman Classic
SALISBURY, NC-- In a meet that lasted over 14 hours the Lady Bears
proved they had the endurance to out sprint the competition
defeating a field of nine colleges in the first annual Livingstone
College Freeman Classic by more than 50 points. The Lady Bears racked up
128 points to the nearest competitors 58, which was conference rival
Livingstone. Leading
the way for the Lady Bears was Asiyah Pelzer who tallied 40
points, 30 individual and 10 coming from the 1600 meter relay,
enough to earn MVP honors for the running events. She finished
first in the 400 meters with a time of 59.72, first in the 400 meter
hurdles with a time of 1:07.05 and first in the high jump with a
personal best of 5 feet 3 inches. Head coach William Montague says
"She may be the best athlete I have ever coached with only two
years of experience... I am going to really miss her next
year." Yvette
Simmons won the MVP award for the field events as she placed first
in the triple jump with a mark of 36-2 and second in the long jump
with a mark of 17-5. Ife' Moore finished second in the 200 meters
running a 25.97 in the prelims and a 26.40 in the finals. Tania
Coleman ran 5:22 in the 1500 meters which was enough to earn second
place honors. Adrain Starks jumped 5 feet in the high jump to take
third, while Lisa Bradsher took a close second in the 400 meter
hurdles and then came back to run the first leg on the winning
1600 meter relay team which consisted of herself, Patrica Beckham,
Kiela Reeves and Pelzer. Reeves and Beckham were joined by Coleman
and Eureka Thompson as they finished first in the 3200 meter relay. The
Lady Bears next meet will be April 11-12 at Norfolk State
University.

Coleman Breaks Record as L.T. Walker Meet
DURHAM, NC -- Shaw University distance
runner Tania Coleman set a new meet record in
the women's 3,000-meter run during the 13th annual LeRoy
T. Walker Olympic Development track & field event hosted by
North Carolina Central University in Durham.
Coleman's winning time of 10:38.79 broke the old
standard of 10:43.84 set back in 1996. She
also won the 1,500m run (5:32.22) and placed
ninth in the 800m run (2:35.87).
Other top performers at the 13th annual LeRoy T. Walker meet were:
Asiyah Pelzer of Shaw - first in women's 400m hurdles
(1:09.31), second in high jump (5' 2"),
third in 400m dash (59.43), and sixth in long jump (17'
0.75").
Shaw won three of the four relays, running to victory in the women's
4x100m relay (49.17), the women's 4x400m relay (3:59.02), and
the men's 4x400m relay (3:33.77).
